The upcoming film is directed by Lee Daniels, who is best known for his work directing the 2009 drama Precious and for creating the musical drama series Empire, which concluded in April.

In the upcoming issue, the director spoke about a number of topics related to the film, and revealed that the inspiration for telling Holiday’s story rooted from an experience watching the 1972 film Lady Sings The Blues, which also took on the challenge of depicting the life of the legendary singer.

Daniels stated; ‘It was the first film that I’d seen, as a 13-year-old kid, where there were two Black people that were beautiful and were in love…I said, “Oh my God, I want to do this. I want to make people feel the way I feel right now.”‘

He also elaborated on the impact that he hoped the film would make on its viewers and expressed his frustration about the setup of the American government both during the time that the film is set and now.

‘When people walk away from this film, I want them to feel the way I felt making it. I looked at the way she stood up to the government, and it just made me think…The system is flawed. It was never meant for Black people, for us,’ he added.

Daniels then noted that Day was the right choice for the role, and related that his experiencing her portraying Holiday had impressed him greatly.

The director said: ‘When I first looked at her, I saw her spirit. I got chills. She wasn’t a desperate actress that just wanted to do it. I could tell she was questioning whether she was good enough. To me, that is when you know that you are really dealing with a perfectionist.’

Day also spoke about her role in the upcoming feature and expressed that the entire production team was invested in creating a positive working environment, which was highly beneficial during filming.

‘Everybody [on set] was so supportive and concerned with each other. The integrity was there; the collaboration, the creativity. It just destroyed this whole idea that there’s only limited space for us,’ she noted.

The actress also spoke about how important it was that she was able to tell Holiday’s story and how she was previously discouraged from taking on similar parts in the past.

Day said: ‘I would have people tell me, “You’re never going to do a role like this. There aren’t many roles for Black women.” And I’ve said this multiple times, but to me, that statement is baffling.’
