Tina Fey’s Broadway musical adaptation of Mean Girls has been shuttered amid coronavirus closures

Tina Fey’s Broadway musical adaptation of Mean Girls has been shuttered amid the ongoing closure on Broadway amid the coronavirus pandemic.

‘The chance to bring this show to Broadway, with such a talented young ensemble and five astounding female leads, has been a dream come true,’ Fey said in a statement. ‘And to our fierce and dedicated fans – the limit of our gratitude does not exist.’

The Mean Girls musical initially hit Broadway in 2018 and had grossed $124 million before it was shuttered amid the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, making it a profitable endeavor, Deadline reported. The success of the film led to a film adaptation of the musical in the offing.

‘We remain excited to bring this musical to the big screen, relaunch the tour and prepare for a London production,’ producer Lorne Michael said. ‘I look forward to the day, hopefully soon, when theaters can open their doors again.’

The musical was co-produced by Sonia Friedman and Stuart Thompson, along with Paramount Pictures, and the production was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin.

Erika Henningsen, Taylor Louderman, Ashley Park, Kate Rockwell, Kerry Butler, Grey Henson and Kyle Selig composed the cast of the adaptation of the 2014 film, which starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler and Fey.

The musical, which was performed at August Wilson Theatre, shut down March 11, 2020 after a total of 805 performances with 29 previews. It also had a 2017 run for five weeks at Washington D.C.’s National Theatre.

‘With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so,’ Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin said. ‘We are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again.’

Other productions that have shut down amid the pandemic closures include Disney’s Frozen and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? featuring Laurie-Metcalf.
