Gugu Mbatha-Raw joins BBC’s adaptation of The Girl Before with HBO Max eyed as a U.S. production partner

While she’s currently filming the highly-anticipated Disney Plus series Loki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw has found her next project.

The 37-year-old British actress has signed on to star in a BBC adaptation of the 2016 novel The Girl Before by JP Delaney, according to Deadline

The adaptation will be told as a four-part mini-series, with HBO Max eyed to board the project as a U.S. production partner.

The Girl Before centers on a woman named Jane (Mbatha-Raw), who discovers the perfect house for her on One Folgate Street.

She becomes obsessed with the minimalist house and buys it, though she soon learns that its previous owner died three years earlier.

As she tries to unravel the truth from the lies, Jane finds herself falling into the same traps as ‘the girl before.’

The novel was originally optioned by Universal Pictures back in 2015, with Ron Howard attached to direct.

The project never moved forward, with Delaney himself now said to be overseeing the adaptation himself.

The film adaptation never made it through to the casting stage, and now it’s set to become a TV adaptation.

Marissa Lastrade (Deep State, Casualty) has been tapped to write the mini-series adaptation, with Lisa Brühlmann (Killing Eve) slated to direct.

42, the British-based production company behind Netflix’s The English Game and Watership Down, will produce, with HBO Max the ‘front runner’ to be the U.S. production partner.

ITV Studios will distribute, with filming slated to begin sometime this year, slated for a debut later in 2021.

Mbatha-Raw is coming off a big year in 2020, where she starred in three films, Come Away, Misbehaviour and Summerland. 

She also stars on Apple TV Plus’ The Morning Show, which is returning for a second season, and she plays Mary Seacole, a Scottish-Jamaican nurse in the Crimean War, in the biopic Seacole, now in post-production.

The actress is currently filming the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios series Loki, which will debut later this year on Disney Plus.
