Karlie Kloss says she’s ‘tried’ after facing social media skepticism in condemning Capitol riots

Karlie Kloss faced social media skepticism after condemning the riots in the U.S. Capitol Wednesday to protest President Donald Trump‘s election loss to President-elect Joe Biden, leading to a chaotic scene that saw politicians scrambling for safety.

‘Accepting the results of a legitimate democratic election is patriotic,’ the supermodel, 28, tweeted in response to the rioting. ‘Refusing to do so and inciting violence is anti-American,’ later saying, ‘I tried.’

The 6ft2 beauty – who is expecting her first child with husband Joshua Kushner, the brother of President Donald Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner – faced a number of critics who said her links to the Kushner family make her words ring hollow.

One wrote, ‘I’m sorry, I just can’t with you. You married into that horrific family. I’m sure you mean well, but you’re a part of it by association and choice.’

Another said, ‘Girl if u really cared u would have dropped that family ages ago u aint fooling no one.’

One remarked, ‘Dinner with the Kushners might be a lil awkward, huh sweetie? But you’ll be frolicking in the Caymans or wherever with your newly pardoned daddy-in-law soon enough I’m sure.’

Not all of Kloss’ fans were upset, as one said, ‘Y’all don’t bring up her relation to the K*shners. She’s her own person and has her OWN views!!!! You stand up for what’s right, sunshine Smiling face with 3 hearts.’

Another suggested the Project Runway personality, who endorsed President-elect Joe Biden in his successful campaign Trump, use her influence to sway Ivanka.

‘Now will you talk to your sister-in-law?’ the user said. ‘She called them “American Patriots” as they were storming the Capital!’

The Illinois native opened up on her political leanings clear speaking with Andy Cohen last year on Watch What Happens Live, alluding to the complicated union with Kushner.

‘I voted as a Democrat in 2016 and I plan to do the same in 2020,’ said Kloss, who has also been supportive of Black Lives Matter, wearing a mask and mail-in voting on her social media accounts. ‘I’m sure I’m not the only person in this country who does not necessarily agree with their family on politics.’

Speaking to Vogue U.K. in 2018, she said that the scrutiny over the relationship had ‘been hard’ but she trudges on.

‘I choose to focus on the values that I share with my husband,’ she said, ‘and those are the same liberal values that I was raised with and that have guided me throughout my life.’
