‘I have known Pete for 10 years, we are friends, we used to live near each other,’ he told the newspaper.

‘We don’t have to agree with each other’s views, that is what a friendship with someone is. But as a person, I think he is a nice guy.’

Colin was approached by Channel 10 to appear on I’m a Celebrity after Pete – who was originally slated for the role – was sacked for sharing a cartoon on social media which depicted an image of the neo-Nazi Black Sun symbol.

Before this, he’d sparked outrage throughout 2020 by sharing conspiracy theories about the coronavirus pandemic and vaccines.

Despite Pete’s extreme views, Colin insisted the pair were friends and said he did not have to agree with somebody to be friends with them.

On Wednesday’s episode, Colin entered the camp in a strange clown challenge, which proved to be difficult for Abbie Chatfield and Toni Pearen, who had to free him from being handcuffed to a clown car.

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! continues Thursday at 7:30pm on Channel 10
