Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor play an estranged couple in the new heist film Locked Down

Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor star as a couple on the verge of separation in their upcoming new heist film, Locked Down, which will be released on January 14. 

In the flick’s new trailer, released on Tuesday, the 38-year-old Oscar winner stars as Linda, who is forced to navigate a mandatory lockdown, which coincides with her untimely decision to breakup with her estranged partner Paxton (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

While continuing to cohabit together proves to be challenging, the duo ultimately devise a plan to steal a diamond from the department store Harrods to ease their financial troubles.

The nearly three-minute teaser begins with Paxton describing the lockdown in London to be a ‘psychological prison of burning aloneness’ to his pals.  

When someone asks him how Linda is doing he curtly replies: ‘She’s somewhere in this house.’

‘Is there some type of issue?’ another asks of their relationship, prompting him to explain they are ‘fine,’ but Linda was ‘planning to end’ their ‘thing.’ 

Paxton complains: ‘For two weeks, we are locked together here.’

Paxton becomes furloughed from his job and says ‘there is literally zero purpose’ to his life, before stepping out of their home to bring back provisions.

Their risky and illegal shenanigans appear to bring them closer and closer together as they can be seen sharing a kiss at the end of the trailer. 

Earlier this week, Hathaway gushed about her character and how the experience of filming in the pandemic about the pandemic felt for her.

The actress and mother of two told People that the experience making the movie was ‘very normal’ in some ways, but also ‘completely wild.’   

Anne said that ‘the sheer act of making it, of doing something so collaborative and audacious made us all very focused and open – and strangely free.’

Adding: ‘Like the odds were so against us anyway that is made me want to lean into the exhilaration and take risks with my performance.’

While she felt safe at work, the star did say she felt nervous taking off her mask amid the alarming number of cases of COVID-19 around the world. 

The Oscar winner said: ‘It was scary taking my mask off every day, and so I really appreciated how committed the crew was to keeping their masks on – even when we were shooting in hot rooms and they were carrying heavy camera and lighting equipment they were always, always masked. Their professionalism helped keep me safe, and I was incredibly grateful to them.’  

The film, which is a heist/romantic comedy according to Deadline, was shot in London during the pandemic by director Doug Liman and will debut on HBO Max.
