Your 2021 home detox: The 20 household items you need to throw out NOW

An organised mum has shared the 20 household items you need to get rid of now, as thousands try to get on top of their home organisation for the New Year.

Steph Pase, 31, from Sydney, conducts a rigorous household ‘cleanse’ at least once every three months, so that nothing has the potential to build up in her home for her family of four.

‘De-cluttering your home can be super overwhelming, and I know one problem most people have is worrying about possibly regretting items they have culled later on,’ Steph wrote on her website.

But, she added, there are 20 things you will never regret when you get rid of them in 2021 – and these are the things you can ditch with ease today.

The items the mum-of-two said you should get rid of include DVDs and videos, coat hangers you’re not using, mismatched socks that have been without a pair for weeks and any old, dead batteries.

Steph also said you should ditch expired spices, old receipts and menus, shoe boxes and kids’ clothes that no longer fit if you have them.

‘All of these are pesky items living in your home that you can get rid of with no regrets later on!’ Steph said.

When you ditch the items, you will also have much more room to create a sleek and minimalist finish in your home.

Thousands of people who saw the post agreed with the mum-of-two’s items to cull, particularly mismatched socks – which many said are a pain:

‘Looking to start your 2021 off feeling cleansed? Pro tip: get all of those pesky socks that don’t seem to have a mate and throw them in the bin,’ one woman posted.

Others suggested always clipping your socks before they go into the laundry basket so they go into washing machine with plastic pegs from Bunnings.

You can even colour code the pegs so that every member of your family or household has a specific colour for their socks.

Some said that jobs like getting on top of their spice drawer and wardrobe for coat hangers were big but rewarding.

The same goes for the laundry cupboard and old sheets and towels, which will give you far more room to play with at home.

‘Life in general can become incredibly busy, overwhelming and sometimes there is simply not enough time in the day,’ Steph said previously.

The tricks include setting a weekly cleaning schedule with daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks and prepping her family’s food as much as possible.

‘Every Sunday, I prep my overnight protein oats for the entire week and refrigerate three servings and freeze the rest,’ she said.

With two young children, Steph added that the mornings can be crazy enough without having to think about making breakfast.

She also pre-chops fruit and vegetables including carrots, capsicum and zucchini for meals during the week.

‘Food preparation can take up a huge chunk of your day, so think where you can save time with this,’ she said.

Several times each week, the mum of two will schedule the washing to start in nine hours time, and so by the time she is up, the washing is done, she can hang it up and it’s done for the day.

If you don’t have the delayed start function, then you could still pop your washing and washing powder inside and just turn it on as soon as you wake up.

Steph’s final time-saving tip is that you should always get up one hour before your kids.

Even if it’s not an hour, Steph said she likes to rise before Willow and Harper, so she can make her kids’ breakfast, answer any urgent emails and hang up the washing.

‘I find being semi-ready before the kids are up makes the mornings run a lot more smoothly,’ she said.
