Home and Away star Sarah Roberts reveals the simple yet powerful way she dealt with her brother’s death from brain cancer
Home and Away actress Sarah Roberts has revealed the method she used to cope with her brother’s death from brain cancer.
Speaking to TV Week on Monday, the 35-year-old revealed she’d been writing letters to herself to make sense of the tragedy.
‘I set out to write a letter to myself as my therapist suggested it,’ Sarah said, admitting it gave her a sense of relief.

‘Then once it was written it felt quite cathartic and I wondered if I should share it with people going through the same thing.’
Sarah did share it, but added: ‘It wasn’t a conscious decision. I’m learning what works in terms of healing and my approach came organically.
‘I hadn’t planned it but I’ve always been honest and wanted to be upfront.’

Sarah’s brother, Karl De Abrew, died in October 2019 after a 15-year battle with brain cancer.
He passed away just three months after walking his sister down the aisle at her wedding to actor James Stewart at Luttrellstown Castle on the outskirts of Dublin.
The ceremony was held in Ireland, where Karl lived, because he was unable to travel overseas due to his condition.

It was about that time she also revealed that she and James, 45, had suffered two miscarriages in the past year.
Speaking about the succession of sad events in November, Sarah told The Daily Telegraph she just had to keep going.

‘You just have to keep on going – the world keeps moving, and sometimes the only way through things is to keep picking yourself up off the ground and keep continuing on, even if it’s hard,’ she said.
Sarah portrays Willow Harris on long-running TV soap Home and Away.
‘I’ve been through so much while working on the show and jumping into [Willow’s] drama was an escape from my real life at times. It’s funny that all that drama is a nice solace,’ she added.
