Tracie Bennett has reassured fans after posting a snap of herself in tears. 

The Coronation Street actress, 59, took to Twitter after worrying her followers, insisting that she’s ‘fine’ as she explained that she ‘made a mistake’ by posting the photograph.

Tracie – who played Sharon Gaskell in the ITV soap – admitted that she ‘felt helpless & hopeless’ following ‘too many deaths of friends’ while attempting to clear up any confusion.

On Wednesday afternoon, Tracie tweeted two photographs of herself side-by-side, writing: ‘Where it started… Where it’s going.’ 

The first snap was a childhood throwback, while the second was a recent shot of herself crying.

An hour later, she inexplicably shared the single distraught photograph of herself in an uncaptioned tweet. 

After worrying fans, hours later, the Lancashire-born actress retweeted her initial side-by-side post and added: ‘I’m ok everyone. There’s been never ending overwhelming bad news all around me for a while.

Another hour later, Tracie returned to Twitter to apologise for causing concern amongst her followers by posting the single distraught photograph.

She replied to the tweet, adding: ‘I have absolutely NO recollection of me putting this single pic up here today. I put the two pics together, up.

‘I must have made a mistake. Specsavers. Jeez. So sorry. Didn’t mean to cause this amount of alarm? Just felt helpless & hopeless at not being able to help others.’ 

Later on in the evening, the soap star once again re-posted the distressing shot and wrote: ‘Again, to be very clear, I made a mistake putting this pic up, by itself.

‘It was meant to be part of the other young/old tweet. Specsavers. I just couldn’t see my keyboard properly. Please. It’s all bad enough.’  

The next morning, Tracie updated her Twitter followers, tweeting: ‘New Day. Had a huge cry and good sleep. Too many deaths of friends. So touched by ALL your kind tweets.’

Tracie first appeared in Coronation Street from 1982-1984 playing the role of Sharon Gaskell.

She returned to reprise her role in 1999, but later left the Cobbles soon afterwards, with her last appearing episode in November of the same year.

Following her time as a soap star, Tracie was successful on the big screen, starring in Shirley Valentine in 1989 and went on to win two Olivier Awards for her roles in Hairspray and She Loves Me.
