A Cornwall pub has been forced to close its doors after staff were abused by visitors from Tier 4 and Tier 3 areas when refused entry for ignoring Covid-19 rules.

The King Arthur’s Arms Inn at Tintagel has warned a ‘silent army’ of people flouting social distancing rules are putting villagers in the South West at risk.

Cornwall entered Tier 2 measures on Boxing Day, meaning pubs can stay open on the condition they serve food to customers.

Millions of people are living under Tier 4 restrictions – with Government guidance warning them to ‘stay at home and not leave your Tier 4 area, other than for legally permitted reasons’.

Tier 3 restrictions warn the public to ‘avoid travelling outside your local area’.

Tourists ignoring the Government’s stay at home message are being told to ‘stay away’ from Cornwall after the King Arthur’s Arms Inn, Tintagel, was closed after visitors from Tier 3 and Tier 4 ‘made life unpleasant’ for staff

Owners of the Tintagel pub say people from other tiers are ignoring the stay at home advice and are then being rude when refused entry.

The four star B&B and pub said: ‘We are now closed for the near future but we will be keeping this action under review.

‘This decision is due in a large part due to some visitors from tiers 3 and 4 postcodes failing to adhere to the stay at home guidance and are, when they are denied entry, actively making life unpleasant for our staff who have been diligently maintaining our strict Covid-19 precautions.’

The pub thanked locals and holidaymakers who cancelled bookings.

But they said: ‘To those who have ignored the Government rules/advice and have actually found accommodation in our area, we can but hope that you are not part of the army of silent coronavirus carriers that do not have the symptoms so by your very presence put our village at peril.’

Twitter users have hit out at people’s decision to flout Covid-19 rules.

Cornwall is a Nation wrote: ‘The selfishness of people from Tiers 3 and 4 illegally coming to Cornwall is causing businesses here to close for fear of the trouble they cause.

The account also shared news that Truro pub the William IV was temporarily closing after two members of staff contracted Covid-19.

Sharing the news on Boxing Day, it wrote: ‘Anyone who thinks the coronavirus is not circulating around Cornwall is in complete denial.

‘Be safe and follow the rules, for your sake and everyone else’s.’
