Gwyneth Paltrow sparks fury as she plugs a $795 slip dress for ‘at-home NYE celebrations’

Gwyneth Paltrow has come under fire for plugging a $795 (£589) dress on her Goop site, amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

The Sliding Doors actress, 48, took to the lifestyle brand’s official Instagram page to share two stunning snaps in which she donned the slinky G. Label Hoffman sweater dress, yet the price left a legion of followers in shock.

After revealing she planned to wear the dress for ‘at-home New Year’s Eve’, the post was soon flooded with comments instructing the star to ‘get real’ while others insisted the clue was in the quality, hence the eye-popping price.

For real!? Gwyneth Paltrow has come under fire for plugging a $795 (£589) dress on her Goop site, amid the global coronavirus pandemic

Gwyneth looked sensational in the shots as she posed up a storm in the slinky black dress, that featured spaghetti straps and a midi hemline.

She wore her blonde locks loose and giggle in one shot, which saw her sitting on the floor with her legs crossed and looking down.

Alongside the duo of stunning snaps, Gwyneth penned: ‘At-home NYE outfit, found. The #GLabel Hoffman sweaterdress is knit from a stretchy and smoothing wool-silk blend that raises the bar for all other LBDs. Link in bio to shop.’

She also styled the dress with a $2,300 (£1,700) Gucci handbag.

Once followers had followed the link through however, rage erupted as they noted the price for the simple dress seemed too much for many.

Users penned: ‘Yes, it’s lovely. But most people can’t afford $795 for a NYE outfit. Especially a stay-at-home one. Get real Goop…

‘Exactly what I thought when I looked at the price.. come on @goop @gwynethpaltrow… Let’s be real about what actual people can afford.

In her defense however, fans hit back: ‘it’s a wool silk blend and though steep it’s not an unreasonable price. If you want Lycra/nylon/polyester head to Kmart/Walmart/Primark/BooHoo….

‘Beautiful! Kind of looking forward to a NYE in, to be honest! Dusting off our outfits now… they are not appealing to “most” people. It’s a luxury brand and the margins are big enough where they don’t need huge volume.’

Goop launched in September 2008 as a weekly news letter and soon evolved into a larger brand, with a documentary on the show airing on Netflix in January.

The site causes controversy mainly down to the obscenely priced products and often bizarre methods and items for lifestyle.

Earlier this month, the annual Goop Holiday Gift Guide raised eyebrows thanks to its curated collection of bizarre merchandise, including a lamp made out of bread, a special bag to store watermelons and a speaker to listen to plants.

One item on sale was a vulva colouring book, a self-heating concrete bathtub and a standalone garden structure called a Studypod.

Gwyneth’s ten-part Goop gift guide does, in fact, include some reasonably-priced, conventional items — but few people are turning to the queen of vaginal steaming and yoni eggs for ‘conventional’ ideas.

To the end, Goop has generously rounded up the most outrageous suggestions in its funny ‘Ridiculous but Awesome’ gift guide.

While the $125,000 retrofitted electric VW bug is the most expensive thing on the list, more likely to raise eyebrows are the Goop x Avocado mattresses, which start at $38,000 each.

They are made of 29 layers of sustainably-sourced and organic materials, which include pure latex and heritage wool from the Goop farms in India and cashmere from royal alpaca from the Peruvian Andes.
