Dilapidated followers of fashion: Kinks brothers ditch their natty threads for a dressed-down Christmas walk

  • The Kinks’ Ray and Dave Davies hardly cut a dash as they met to exchange gifts
  • Sir Ray, 76, in flat cap, jacket, trousers and scruffy trainers, chatted with Dave
  • Relations haven’t always been so cordial with Ray once stomping on Dave’s cake

In the Sixties they had a reptutation for natty dressing – despite penning a hit lampooning a Dedicated Follower Of Fashion.

But The Kinks’ Ray and Dave Davies hardly cut a dash as they met to exchange gifts on Christmas Eve.

Sir Ray, 76, in flat cap, jacket, leisure trousers and scruffy trainers, chatted with Dave, 73, who wore a long dark coat and woolly hat, as they strolled near their homes in North London and drank from cans of lager.

Dave later tweeted that he had given Sir Ray a T-shirt and mask bearing the name of punk singer Jayne County.

Their sibling rivalry was never far below the surface in The Kinks, although the band survived more than 30 years until splitting in 1996

Relations between the brothers, whose hits include Waterloo Sunset, Lola and Sunny Afternoon, have not always been so cordial.

In one notorious incident the following year, Ray stamped on Dave’s 50th birthday cake.

But in 2004, Ray took Dave in after he suffered a massive stroke. In 2018 Dave revealed The Kinks were back in the studio working on new music.
