Richard Wilkins says Christmas can be ‘complicated’ with five children

Christmas is a precious time for many families because it’s one of the few holidays when everyone comes together to celebrate.

But when you’ve got five children to four different mothers, things can get a little tricky – just ask Today Extra host Richard Wilkins

Richard, 66, told 9Honey on Thursday that the festive period is always ‘a little bit complicated’ for him. 

He explained that his socialite son Christian – the most famous of his adult children – usually goes to Queensland with his mother, Michelle Burke. 

‘It is always a bit complicated. Christian’s mum liked to take him up to Queensland for Christmas,’ Richard said.

‘So there was a time I used to make them fly down on Christmas Day.’  

Richard always makes sure to spend quality time with his son over the holidays, but it’s rarely on December 25.

‘These days, we just pick a date in December and that is our Christmas Day and we make it work,’ he said. 

It comes after Christian revealed on Twitter that his boozy Christmas plans hadn’t gone down too well with his family.

‘Telling my family I’m going to get really drunk on Xmas and be the “lit star” for the tree has not gone down as well as expected,’ he tweeted on December 1.

A lover of the limelight, Christian has stepped out of Richard’s shadow in recent years thanks to his growing catalogue of statement-making red carpet appearances.

Christian, who came out as gay in 2018, never shies away from bold colours, textures and patterns, pushing the envelope in terms of both style and gender stereotypes.

‘People used to call me a girl all the time because I was a gay guy who was very flamboyant, and did dance and singing,’ he said on his podcast, Radical Fashionism, last November.

‘People always used to call me a girl, and I always found that such a strange diss, because I feel like in order to be offended by something, what they’re calling you needs to be offensive.’
