Notoriously private singer Lorde, 24, makes a surprising return to social media

Lorde has returned to posting reviews on her onion ring devotee Instagram account, Onion Rings Worldwide.

The Royals hitmaker let her alternate account gather dust for three years after she was revealed as the owner back in 2017.

But over the weekend, the 24-year-old singer made a big comeback to the account, which is dedicated to posting reviews on the different onion rings she’s tried around the world.

She’s back: Notoriously private singer Lorde, 24, has made a surprising return to social media this week

Lorde’s first comeback post featured a picture of some of the deep-fried vegetable snacks, and the caption read: ‘Don’t call it a crumb back…’

The Kiwi singer then went on to share three further pictures of her most recently ranked rings.

She also explained that her absence was due to how ’embarrassed’ she felt ordering onion rings after her identity as the owner of the account was leaked.

She wrote in one caption: ‘I’ve got to be honest with you, this reviewer stopped ordering onion rings after her identity was leaked to the press in the great debacle of 2017. I’d get a smile and a wink from waitstaff— it got embarrassing, you know? But it occurred to me that some things are too good to let the internet spoil (sic).’

Lorde confessed to owning the account back in June 2017, after fans speculated she was behind the amusing posts because she and members of her team were among the 24 followers the account – which now boasts 16.8k followers – had at the time.

Speaking about her reasons for starting the account as she admitted ownership, the ‘Green Light’ hitmaker said at the time: ‘I naively didn’t realise that it would be a thing that I was going to different places and trying the onion rings at each of those places.’

‘I think they’re underrated as well. I don’t think they get enough credit.’

The bio on the account still reads ‘Every onion ring I encounter, rated,’ as it did when Lorde first set it up in 2017.

Last month, Lorde revealed the reason reason she quit social media and went into ‘hiding’.

It came after she was spotted with her boyfriend for the first time in 18 months after she took a step away from the spotlight.

She said she ‘peaced out’ because she felt like she was ‘losing her free will’.

The Kiwi star decided to step back from the likes of Twitter and Instagram because she felt ‘massive amounts of stress’ about the planet, racism and police brutality.

‘Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country,’ she told Interview magazine.

Lorde, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, previously insisted she is ‘working out how to practise activism’ whilst ‘refraining from social media’ following the death of George Floyd in May.

She said: ‘You probably weren’t expecting to hear from me for another few months, but I can’t ask for your attention one week and go silent on something like this the next. It’s hard to strike a balance between self-serving social media displays and true action.

‘But part of being an ally is knowing when to speak and when to listen, and I know that white silence right now is more damaging than someone’s wack protest selfie. So let me be clear: this ongoing systemic brutality by police is racist, it’s sickening, and it’s unsurprising.’

Lorde purged her official Instagram account back in May 2018.

She mysteriously removed all of her Instagram photos except just three – a picture of the words ‘Trust Me’ dating back to December 2016, an image of a crowd wearing 3D-glasses dating back to January 2017, and a third image of her on stage dating back to April 2018.

She also deleted her Tweets back to late 2017.

The brunette star was seen for the first time in months just weeks ago, when she stepped out on a rare outing with her boyfriend, Justin Warren, in her home city of Auckland.

The last time she and her Universal Music executive beau, 41, were pictured together was way back in March 2019.

And the lovebirds proved they were still going strong as they shared a passionate kiss before walking hand in hand along the waterfront.
