Coming 2 America: Eddie Murphy stars as Prince Akeem in new trailer

He starred in the iconic 80s comedy Coming to America, which was released in 1988.

And 32 years later, Eddie Murphy is back as Prince Akeem Joffer of Zamunda in the sequel, Coming 2 America.

The film circles around the former Prince and to be King Akeem discovering he has a son he didn’t know existed living in America,  as seen in the just released trailer on Tuesday.

His father, played by James Earl Jones, is heard saying in the opening of the trailer: ‘You must heed my words before I am gone son. Now you will be King.’

The castle – his home – is seen from far away before the inside is shown, including a statue of his father, who is also heard saying: ‘But the throne must pass to a male heir. Akeem, it appears you have a son who must be found.’

Both Eddie and Arsenio play multiple other characters in the film that were also featured in the first film including the singer Randy Watson, the barbershop customer Saul and the barber shop owner Clarence.

Arsenio also plays Morris the barber and Reverend Brown.

The film is directed by Craig Brewer with a screenplay by Kenya Barris, David Sheffield and Barry W. Blaustein.

The story was created by Justin Kanew, Barry and David, based on characters created by Eddie; Coming 2 America is produced by Kevin Misher and Eddie.

It was originally supposed to hit theaters through Paramount Pictures but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the domestic distribution rights were sold to Amazon Studios.

It will be released on March 5, 2021 on Amazon Prime unless countries where Paramount will release it to theaters. 

The original film Coming To America was released on June 29, 1988. 

Coming 2 America premieres on Amazon Prime on March 5, 2021.
