‘The best gift ever’: Channel Seven star Angela Cox bursts into tears as she gets on the last flight to Queensland from Sydney to spend Christmas with her seriously ill mother

Channel Seven star Angela Cox has has spoken of her relief after catching the final flight to Queensland from Sydney to visit her gravely ill mother.

The Morning Show journalist said she ‘burst into tears’ when she boarded the plane after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk slammed the borders shut on Monday amid New South Walescoronavirus outbreak.

Sharing a picture of her ticket on Instagram, the reporter described the moment as the ‘best gift ever’, writing: ‘I feel like I am holding a Golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

‘They cancelled my flight to the GC – the last flight in before cut off – and I was in tears thinking I’d miss this time with my mum.’

While it’s not known what type of cancer her mother Larelle is battling, Angela has been open about her illness on numerous occasions while reporting on Seven. 

Angela said ‘nothing was available’ as she scrambled to get on a different flight, with a colleague even offering to swap seats with her so she could get home to be beside her mum. 

‘In the end, @virginaustralia came through,’ she continued. ‘I have worked almost every Christmas of my career and normally don’t mind missing out on what is a special family day… but I couldn’t miss this one.

‘I bawled like a baby when they found this seat for me. I have never been more grateful to get on a plane.’

She signed off: ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you. Merry Christmas everyone. I don’t need any presents. This is the best gift ever.’

She later posted a picture of herself in self-quarantine, as she waits to get the ‘all clear’ so she can visit her mum in a care facility.

‘I didn’t want to take any chances because she is in a care facility and even though I have no symptoms and haven’t been to the Northern Beaches I wanted to make sure I was 100 per cent safe,’ she added.

‘Here’s to playing by the rules. We all have to do the right thing to beat this thing and keep everyone safe.’

Queensland blocked residents from Greater Sydney to travel on Monday, after a cluster of COVID-19 cases in Sydney’s northern beach emerged.

Angela’s post comes days after she announced her new role anchoring 7News, alongside Michael Usher.
