Young seal which got tangled in rope attached to buoy is rescued after being spotted in harbour by dog walker

  • Rescue divers able to remove the rope that had become trapped around neck 

A trapped young seal was saved while struggling in tangles of rope when a dog walker happened to spot him.

Sally-Ann Bennett and her cocker spaniel Lottie caught sight of the hapless seal while on a walk in Portreath, Cornwall. 

Ms Bennett quickly alerted the British Divers Marine Life Rescue who were able to send out two helpers to come and save the seal.

She said the seal was trapped in rope attached to a buoy and looked very tired. 

She said: ‘It was only a young seal and was dipping beneath the water a few times. 

‘I rang for help straight away and luckily the British Divers Marine Life Rescue came out and saved it.

‘All’s well that end’s well.’

Pictures show the spotted seal completely wrapped up in rope with a bright red buoy floating close to its face making it hard for the animal to get away.

The rescue comes just days after a Cornwall-based seal research group was given £75,000 from the government to help seals’ habitats. 

Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust received a grant of £75,700 from the government’s £80 million Green Recovery Challenge Fund for its ‘People Protecting Precious Places’ project.
