Kaley Cuoco’s HBO Max mystery-thriller series The Flight Attendant gets renewed for a second season

Kaley Cuoco will be qualifying for some frequent flier miles soon.

On Friday, it was announced by HBO’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys that the mystery series The Flight Attendant will be renewed for a second season.

The HBO Max show was originally planned as a miniseries, and the critical acclaim it has received over the course of its run prompted its producers to order an additional set of episodes.

In a statement, Bloys commented on the widespread positive reception of the series, and said that: ‘We are delighted that the show has resonated so strongly with audiences and critics.’

‘We congratulate Kaley, Steve, Greg and Sarah, along with the rest of the incredibly talented cast, executive producers and our partners at Warner Bros. Television on all the success of the first season. I look forward to seeing where Cassie will go next.’

Cuoco made a statement of her own, and expressed a similar enthusiasm about how the series went over with its viewers.

‘To say that I am elated would be an understatement! The positive response to our show has surpassed all of our expectations and I’m so proud of the entire team behind its success.’

She also thanked the various production teams behind the show’s development, and noted that the upcoming season would attempt to raise the bar on the series’ already high standards.

‘We are committed to delivering diverse and quality entertainment, including an exciting (and probably a little crazy) TFA season 2!!’

The 8 Simple Rules also made an announcement about the renewal on Friday with a post made to her Instagram account; the caption read, ‘THANK YOU EVERYONE THAT HELPED TURN THIS DREAM INTO REALITY.’

The series was based on the 2018 book of the same name, written by Chris Bohjalian.

The production rights for the novel were purchased by Cuoco’s production company Yes, Norman Productions before the book was ever published; the actress also served as an executive producer on the show.

On Thursday, series developer Steve Yockey spoke to Deadline about the end of the first season, and noted that the unresolved aspects of the last episode put the writers in a position where they could service the fans without weakening the story.

‘If they get to have more of it, it’ll be an exciting thing rather than well, they better answer these cliffhangers.’

He also discussed how the producers aimed to change some typically used mystery tropes in order to make the series all the more interesting.

‘Our goal always was to write basically a Hitchcock character that would normally be played by a man and just throw a woman into it and see what happened.’

Dual roles: In addition to starring in the series, Cuoco serves as one of its executive producers; she is seen in 2019
