He played the iconic DC role of Clark Kent/Superman for five years in the 90s.

But American actor Dean Cain insists real heroes, the men and women in the police force, don’t wear capes.

The 54-year-old, who became a reserve office two years ago, told TodayExtra on Thursday that he wants the public to ‘understand and respect law enforcement’.

The handsome star played the role of Clark Kent/Superman in the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 1993 to 1997.

He later became sworn in as a reserve police officer in the US state of Idaho in June 2018.  

‘I felt the way I could serve others was to step in myself, stand with the men and women in blue, and try and sort of bridge that gap that has started to exist here in the United States and elsewhere,’ he explained of his decision to join the force. 

Dean told the hosts that with recent events in the press, the perception of the police isn’t always positive among the pubic.

‘Police officers are real heroes, all the time. For someone who played a hero on TV to come and become one of these officers, and I would never call myself a hero, but to be alongside some of these real heroes is important,’ Dean said.

‘I want people to understand and respect law enforcement. There are bad seeds in every group unfortunately and there has been negative stories, but I want to try and counter balance that. 

‘There are great thing you can do as a law enforcement officer, and I take great pride in that,’ he added.

The God’s Not Dead star rejoined the DC universe between 2015 and 2017 on Supergirl, where he played Kara Danvers/Supergirl ‘s father Jeremiah Danvers.

Dean said he looks back on his time as Superman with ‘extremely fond memories’ and believes it made for an amazing start to his career.  

‘When I get associated with the character now, I’m still happy as a clam because what would you want to be called, if you were ever going to be called the same character for life, I think Superman pretty much takes the cake.’
