Florence Pugh signs on to play the title character in Universal Pictures’ adaptation of upcoming book The Maid

Florence Pugh has continually proven to be one of the most in-demand actresses working today, landing yet another high-profile project.

The 24-year-old British beauty has signed on to play the title character in The Maid for Universal Pictures, according to Deadline.

The news comes just six months after HarperCollins prevailed in a ‘heated’ six-publisher auction for the debut novel from Canadian writer Nina Prose.

The Maid follows Molly (Pugh), a maid at the ritzy Regency Grand Hotel, who is ‘used to being invisible,’ cleaning up after the rich and famous and the secrets they leave behind.

Her world gets turned upside down when she discovers an infamous and wealthy guest named Mr. Black dead in his bed. 

What follows is described as a search for the truth that mirrors the popular board game Clue, as Molly tries to determine who she can trust.

HarperCollins will publish The Maid as one of their lead hardcover titles in the Spring of 2022, following the intense bidding war in June.

Nita Prose is the pen name of Nita Pronovost, the vice president and editorial director at Simon & Schuster in Canada.

Pugh will also serve as a producer, alongside Josh McLaughlin for Wink Pictures and and Chris Goldberg through his Winterlight Pictures, with Prose executive producing.

The project doesn’t have a screenwriter or director attached at this time, though producer Goldberg revealed on Twitter he always saw Pugh playing Molly.

‘When I read @NitaProse’s book in one sitting I saw one person: @Florence_Pugh. And now she’s starring and I’m producing,’ he began.  

‘Absolutely surreal. Could never have happened without: @agentmilburn @josiefreedman. So grateful and inspired right now,’ he concluded.

Pugh is coming off of two critically-acclaimed 2019 movies, the A24 thriller Midsommar and Sony’ adaptation of Little Women. 

She is also starring in the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios adventure Black Widow as Yelena Belova, the sister of Scarlett Johansson’s title character.

Pugh will also reprise that role in the upcoming Hawkeye TV series, and she’s currently filming Don’t Worry Darling, the new film from director Olivia Wilde, starring alongside Harry Styles and Chris Pine.
