Robotics: Kitchen assistant will cook 5,000 recipes from scratch – and even do the washing up after

Meal prep just got considerably easier thanks to a robotic kitchen assistant that will cook 5,000 different recipes from scratch — and even do the dishes afterwards.

Developed by UK-based Moley Robotics, the cooking automaton has two dextrous hands and was modelled to mimic the 2011 MasterChef winner, Tim Anderson.

The ‘Automated Kitchen’ can gather ingredients from a smart fridge, fill pans, mix, pour, adjust hob temperatures and serve up — just like a regular cook would.

Unlike a human, however, it will never complain about having to do the washing up.

The Automated Kitchen is the product of a collaboration of around one hundred engineers and designers — along with three award-winning chefs — and took six years to be fully realised and market-ready.

The robot uses a combination of sensors and cameras to find its way around and locate ingredients, cookware and utensils within the kitchen.

Markers placed on the handles and lids of its stainless-steel cookware allow the system to correctly orientate the pots, pans and utensils as it works.

Meanwhile, the cameras allow it to detect and clean up any spilled food — while an integrated ultraviolet lamp helps it to rid kitchen surfaces of germs.

Purchasing the robot chef and its integrated kitchen, Moley Robotics said, will set you back about the same amount as a ‘conventional luxury kitchen’ — roughly in the region of £30,000–55,000, depending on the exact configuration.

The ‘internet of things’ -enabled kitchen is also available on its own, they said, and includes a smart fridge and storage area that warns when ingredients are running low or close to their expiry dates, along with an oven, induction hob and sink.

For the system’s launch at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition in Dubai last week, Mr Anderson and fellow master chefs  Andrew Clarke and Nicole Pisani created 30 special recipes to put the robot through its paces.

Moley Robotics have said that the system will be updated with new meal plans every month — with the aim of creating a database of 5,000 standard recipes to which owners can then add their own favourites.
