It means around 60 per cent of the population of England will be under the highest level of restrictions – although No10 has insisted that all the curbs will still be relaxed on December 23 as part of the Christmas ‘bubbles’ plan.

As well as theatres, venues such as cinemas and bowling alleys must also close their doors while pubs, restaurants and cafes have to close except for takeaway.

Shops and hairdressers and salons will be allowed to remain open and groups of six will be allowed to meet outdoors only however crowds at live events will be banned.
