Taylor Momsen remembers Jim Carrey being ‘so kind’ while shooting How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Taylor Momsen had her breakout role as Cindy Lou Who in 2000’s– How The Grinch Stole Christmas — when she was just seven-years-old.

And now, as the Christmas fantasy film celebrates its 20th anniversary, Momsen shared about the lasting impact the project has had on her life going forward.

One of the many standout moments for the actress and singer was getting to work alongside Jim Carrey, who played the iconic title role of the Grinch.

Directed by Ron Howard and narrated by Anthony Hopkins, How The Grinch Stole Christmas was originally the second highest-grossing holiday film of all-time, behind Home Alone, earning more than $345 million at the box office. 

Carrey received widespread praise for his performance as the mischievous Grinch.

And Momsen had more than a front row seat to witness his skills and approach that she called ‘incomparable.’

‘I remember him being so kind, so concerned, but so methodical with what he was doing,’ the now 27-year-old revealed during an interview on Today.

‘Even at that young of an age, I remember watching him and going, “I’m watching an artist right now at work.”‘

The film also turned out to become a formative musical experience for Momsen, who sang the soundtrack song, Christmas, Why Can’t I Find You?

‘The thing that I remember the most that probably resonated with me to this day as an adult was the first time that I went into a recording studio and got to work with the amazing James Horner,’ she shared while referencing the American composer, conductor and orchestrator who’s resume includes scoring Titanic, which became the best-selling orchestral film soundtrack of all time.  

‘And I’ll never forget walking into this beautiful studio, with this immaculate console in front of me, and putting headphones on and singing into a microphone for the first time, singing Where Are You Christmas.’

She added, ‘That was such an impactful moment in my life because it made me go, “I wanna make music for the rest of my life. I love being’ in a recording studio.”‘

The St. Louis native is still living out her passion for music by fronting the rock band The Pretty Reckless since 2009.

They have a new single out called Death By Rock And Roll, ahead of the release of their fourth studio album, which is slated to drop in the new year.      

‘I’m really excited for people to hear it because I think we really created something special,’ she said. 

Momsen is also known for her role as Jenny Humphrey on The CW’s teen drama series Gossip Girls (2007-2012). 

In an interview with Elle magazine in August 2011, Momsen revealed she had quit acting to focus on her music career.
