The Handmaid’s Tale renewed for Season 5 as stars Elisabeth Moss and others react to the renewal

Disney is live-streaming its four-hour presentation of Walt Disney Investor Day, where they have been making numerous announcements, including the renewal of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Disney-owned Hulu’s CEO Dana Walden revealed during the live-streamed event that the streaming service will renew the critically-acclaimed show for a fifth season.

Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale is currently in production, slated to debut in 2021, with the cast reacting to the news in a new video (via @HandmaidsOnHulu Twitter). 

The video features stars such as Elisabeth Moss (June Osborne), Madeline Brewer (Janine Lindo), Max Minghella (Nick Blaine), Alexis Bledel (Emily Malek), Amanda Brugel (Rita) and Samira Wiley (Moira Strand) as they film Season 4 in Canada.

Bradley Whitford (Joseph Lawrence) reveals ‘we’re pumping out Season 4’ while Moss adds, ‘I’ve got a couple of the scripts right here.’

Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia Clements) adds, ‘All I can say is hold onto your seats,’ while Moss adds she’s ‘thrilled’ to announce the Season 5 pick-up.

Dowd also thanked the fans, ‘from the bottom of my heart’ as Joseph Fiennes (Fred Waterford) adds it’s ‘profoundly cool’ to continue the series. 

Moss added, ‘it’s my privilege and honor to tell this story’ while the rest of the cast thanked the fans for all of their support.

Moss concluded the video by stating the next season of the show will be, ‘a wild ride’ with the fourth season debuting in 2021.  

Filming is currently under way in Toronto, with the show based on the classic novel by Margaret Atwood.

The show is set in the dystopia of Giled, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States.

Moss plays Offred/June Osborne, one of the few fertile women left in the country who is forced into ‘sexual servitude’ in hopes of re-populating the planet.

The show follows Offred/June as she goes on a quest to find the daughter that was taken from her. 

Season 4 will introduce a new character, Mrs. Keyes, played by Mckenna Grace, who signed on in September.

Mrs. Keyes is described as, ‘a sharply intelligent, teenaged wife of a much older Commander who rules her farm and household with confidence, who has a, ‘rebellious, subversive streak, and is calm and pious on the outside with turmoil, even insanity, on the inside.’
