Shawn Mendes apologizes to Sam Smith after accidentally misgendering them during Jingle Ball intro

Shawn Mendes has apologized for accidentally misgendering Sam Smith while introducing them at iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball on Thursday.

The In My Blood singer, 22, took to Instagram to say sorry to Smith – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – after introducing the Dancing With A Stranger singer, 28, with masculine wording.

‘Oh @samsmith I’m so sorry for refferring (sic) to you as a ‘he’ for your jingle ball introduction,’ Mendes wrote, adding ‘It absolutely slipped my mind. Wont happen again.

He continued the message saying: ‘Sending you so much love ! Also you absolutely are one of the funniest people I’ve ever met ! ❤️❤️.’

Later that day Smith replied to Mendes on their own Instagram Story, reposting the apology and adding: ‘We’re all learning together. Happy holidays, all my love xx.’

Sam came out as non-binary in 2019 Instagram statement, telling followers: ‘Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ 

‘After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. 

‘I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! 

‘I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you,’ they went on.

Smith’s third album Love Goes debuted on October 30. 

Shawn recently released The Christmas Song with his girlfriend Camila Cabello.

He also dropped his documentary In Wonder on Netflix last month.
