Hayden Christensen set to return as Darth Vader in Disney Plus’ new Obi-Wan Kenobi series

Disney made a slew of announcements during its annual Investor’s Day presentation, including the bombshell that Hayden Christensen will return as Annakin Skywalker.

Disney Plus had previously announced that Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new TV series for Disney Plus, though Thursday’s announcement is the first confirmation that Annakin Skywalker will return.

LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy made the announcement, confirming the show will take place 10 years after the 2005 film Revenge of the Sith.

The show was first announced at the D23 convention in Anaheim last year, revealing McGregor will be back as Obi-Wan from the Star Wars prequels.

Kennedy revealed the show, ‘begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Revenge of the Sith, where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

She teased that Anakin will square off against his former teacher Obi-Wan in what she billed as, ‘the rematch of the century.’

While many fans assumed that Obi-Wan and Anakin didn’t meet again until he had fully transformed into Darth Vader in the first Star Wars movie, 1977’s A New Hope, this show will reveal a battle in between.

Since there is roughly a 30-year gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, there was certainly the possibility of their paths crossing again, which has now been confirmed.

McGregor previously revealed that production will get under way in March 2021, though it’s unclear when it may be ready to debut on Disney Plus.

McGregor debuted as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first Star Wars prequel, 1999’s The Phantom Menace, with Jake Lloyd portraying young Anakin.

Christensen played Anakin 10 years later in 2002’s The Clone Wars, and returned in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith.

Christesen’s casting was just one of a slew of Star Wars announcements made during Investor’s Day, which included the next Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron.

Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 filmmaker Patty Jenkins was announced to direct this epic adventure, focusing on the beloved group of fighter pilots.

While the studio didn’t reveal much in the way of plot details, Jenkins, who will be the first female director of any Star Wars movie, released a special video revealing exactly why she’s uniquely qualified to direct this film.

The video features Jenkins rollerblading down a runway, before coming to a stop at her vehicle.

The filmmaker reveals that she loves ‘to move fast at a speed of any kind,’ which she reveals is because she grew up ‘as the daughter of a fighter pilot.’

She said that when her father, ‘lost his life in service to this country,’ she has wanted to make, ‘the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.’

However, she could never ‘find the right story,’ until now, where she found a movie about two things she loves.

She concluded the video by putting on a Rogue Squadron helmet and zipping up an orange flight suit as she walked towards an X-Wing fighter ship before the official Rogue Squadron logo was revealed.

Kathleen Kennedy announced that Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will be released in theaters on Christmas Day 2023.
