David and Victoria Beckham ‘plan to build a super cellar’ at their £6million Cotswolds home

David and Victoria Beckham have reportedly made plans to build a ‘super cellar’ in their £6 million Cotswolds home.

Amid ongoing renovations at their country abode, the superstar couple have allegedly made a request to West Oxfordshire District Council to see if they make changes to the original plan to build a wine cellar underneath their garage.

The initial plan was for the cellar to be connected for the main house by an underground walkway, but the football legend, 45, and his designer wife, 46, hope to now make the basement space bigger instead.

The Sun reports that the couple hope to extend the space from the originally proposed 81 sq metres to 117.5 sq metres, and at 36 x 36 ft, there’ll be enough room to house thousands of bottles of wine. 

They add that the Beckhams will be able to access their cellar via a staircase by the garage, which is also being expanded to house their fleet of luxury vehicles.   

Figures, according to Royal Institute of British Architects 2011 The Case for Space Report, show that the expansion will be considerably larger than the average 88 sq metres size of a newbuild three-bedroom house in the UK.

Outlining how the amendments will have only a minor affect on the original plans, The Design and Access Statement reads: ‘The proposed changes include some amendments to the arrangement of the doors, windows, rooflights and flues of the approved garage outbuilding.

‘The proposed amendments are minor in nature and do not affect neighbouring properties or have any impact on the setting of the adjacent listed building.’

The cellar plans are just some of the changes the Beckham clan have planned for their Grade II listed pad, of which they’ve spend a majority of lockdown in. 

Plans to build a huge lake at their Cotswolds home has recently started – despite backlash from neighbours. 

Diggers were pictured excavating the proposed site on Monday, with the couple planning to build a kidney-shaped lake of 4,170 sq metres complete with an island.

When David and Victoria submitted the plans, they were met with concern from fellow residents who voiced fears of the brood ‘racing speed boats and shattering the peace’. 

Builders have made considerable progress with a huge area of the Beckham’s land turfed up and tons of soil removed. 

The couple decided to expand the size of the lake from 2976 sq metres to 4,170 sq metres so they could add an island. 

Despite protests from residents, the council gave the couple permission to create the water feature on their land in August. 

The Beckham family’s building pans had previously been blocked to protect wildlife before being given the green light under certain conditions.  

The couple will have to plant hedgerows and trees to protect native birds, and also use special lights to help bats. 

The lake has been the subject to much discussion from residents, with one writing to the council at the time of the proposal voicing their objection, asserting that ‘it is just not on!’ 

The pair are now in a race against time to finish building the lake by February next year as workers can only be on site between August and February to protect nesting birds.   

It must have an underground chamber – known as a hibernacula – to help support reptiles, amphibians and hedgehogs.

The council also requires the Beckhams to submit a five-year maintenance plan to show how they will support the area’s biodiversity.

Several residents objected to the plans. Neighbour Michael Douglas blasted the couple for ‘trying to bring suburbia to the countryside’.

He said: ‘If they had wanted all they have applied for, why not find an estate which was big enough to accommodate all of this.’
