Mackenzie Davis chats ‘dirtbag’ style, her love of The Bachelor, and the flaws of Happiest Season

Happiest Season star Mackenzie Davis struck a pose in clothing, jewelry, and accessories from the Chloé SS/21 season in a new spread styled by Jay Hines and shot by photographer Jason Hetherington.

The Canadian 33-year-old said her style heroes were Charlotte Rampling and Lauren Hutton, but she considers herself more of a ‘dirtbag.’

‘My stylist [Karla Welch] and I talk about that when we have a big press thing to do. “What would Charlotte do?”‘ Mackenzie told Flaunt on Thursday.

'I like women who can wear masculine stuff and are quite undone while looking extremely chic': The Canadian 33-year-old said her style heroes were Charlotte Rampling and Lauren Hutton, but she considers herself more of a 'dirtbag'

‘Also love Lauren Hutton and I like women who can wear masculine stuff and are quite undone while looking extremely chic. I myself follow a little bit on the dirtbag side of that where I do not do a check with myself when I leave the house – if this is something that somebody would wear…I think it’s a holdover from LA, where there’s a real, very relaxed way of dressing.’

Make-up artist Caroline Barnes played up Davis’ big bushy brows and brought out her natural beauty.

Hairstylist Mark Francome Painter coiffed the 5ft11in blonde’s baby bangs and wavy ombré mullet.

Despite quarantine, Mackenzie said she had ‘a lot of stuff in my life that happened this year’ and she considered the coronavirus pandemic a ‘personal test of character.’

Davis apparently streamed a lot of seasons of The Bachelor as she called the ABC reality competition her ‘all-time favorite piece of media’ and ‘favorite thing in the world.’

‘I might have an unhealthy relationship with it. There is a currency of vulnerability on the show where you can get close to someone if they are vulnerable, but they kind of announce their vulnerability beforehand,’ the self-proclaimed feminist explained.

‘And it’s skewed the idea, not just in my mind, but generally of what it actually feels like to be vulnerable, because vulnerability is a seriously unsafe space that doesn’t get rewarded at the end.

‘It’s not like I am vulnerable so I get a rose – it’s like I am vulnerable to harm, it means that I am penetrable and scared of what will befall me when I open this part of myself up. So I think that sort of radical vulnerability of this year, and that understanding of it, is not this tokenized thing, but a scary space to exist in.’

Mackenzie was promoting her holiday lesbian rom-com Happiest Season, which she decided to do because of the star power of her onscreen leading lady, Twilight alum Kristen Stewart.

‘You understand why people are movie stars,’ Davis said of the 30-year-old César Award winner.

‘Kristen doing it was such a vote of confidence. I think she has such an interesting career and she’s not precious about the work that she does in that everything is going to be nominated for a César Award.’

Last month, Clea DuVall’s PG-13 flick broke records for Hulu and amassed more viewers than any original film on the service – according to Variety.

But the Irresistible actress did not think Happiest Season tied up her closeted character Harper’s deceptive storyline with her girlfriend Abby (Stewart).

‘In terms of all the stuff, the imperfections, and the character failings and stuff like that, I felt sort of worried about it and insecure when we were filming it,’ Mackenzie lamented.

‘And there’s also this feeling that I had making the movie, and that I had watching the movie, where I’m like, “These girls are going to have a lot of work to do on their relationship after this.” Like it doesn’t feel like it ends now.

‘There’s a lot of unpacking, this experience is going to go on, so I guess what I’m saying is: I think all those messy bits do make it better because it’s not a riding off into the sunset sort of story.’
