Drew Barrymore says Neil Patrick Harris’ husband gave her life-changing advice on flying with kids

Drew Barrymore praised Neil Patrick Harris’ husband David Burtka for changing her perspective on traveling with her kids, who were prone to crying on airplanes.

After years of feeling ‘so stressed and embarrassed’ whenever her daughters Olive, eight, and six-year-old Frankie misbehaved, she said a flight with Burtka changed her life forever.

During Wednesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the 45-year-old actress recalled the comforting words he offered her as her little ones had a loud outburst.

Sweet exchange: Drew Barrymore praised Neil Patrick Harris’ husband David Burtka for changing her perspective on traveling with her kids, who were prone to crying on airplanes

As she chatted with the pair, she described how the father-of-two, 45, became ‘near and dear’ to her heart after ‘a really bad flight’ with her little girls, who ‘were both acting out.’

While feeling ‘horrified’ at the idea of ‘ruining everyone else’s flight’ around her, she said Burtka told her she was doing a ‘good job’ and crying tots on planes is ‘normal.’

Barrymore recalled him saying: ‘It’s okay, try to take the stress out of your body. People aren’t as upset as you probably are projecting that they are.’

She continued, ‘And you changed my life that day because I flew with my children everywhere all the time, I took them all over the place. And you changed flying for me because I was always so stressed and embarrassed. So thank you.’

‘I’m so happy because we’ve all been there. We’ve had that crying child and you think you’re so horrified that you have this crying child that everybody is looking at you. I’m so glad you got through it. You did it with ease,’ Burtka replied.

Barrymore said she would ‘never forget’ his kindness that day and ‘always’ tries to ‘pay it forward.’

Burtka’s ten-year-old twins Gideon and Harper, who he shares with Harris, are only two years older than Barrymore’s eldest.

Additionally, she said she was a ‘Doberman’ with her children, who she shares with ex-husband Will Kopelman.

Around the same time, she talked to People about how her self-titled talk show would affect her kids’ privacy: ‘My life with my children, my feelings, that’s all on the table — but (Olive and Frankie themselves) are not.’

‘Because of my life experiences, I’m not selling my brand on my kids. I won’t do it,’ she explained. ‘But to ignore that part of my life would make me an automaton. So it’s really inventive to figure out how to bring them into the omelet and fold it in, in a way that feels appropriate for me.’
