OMC’s hit ‘How Bizarre’ goes viral on TikTok… 25 years after first topping the charts across the globe and making $11million for the pop band

The classic Kiwi hit How Bizarre has gone viral thanks to TikTok.

The catchy song, which was first released by New Zealand pop band OMC back in 1995, has become one of the biggest hits on the Chinese social media app over the last few weeks.

According to Stuff, clips featuring How Bizarre have already surpassed more than 2.2billion views.

Despite OMC being a one hit wonder, How Bizarre is still the biggest song to ever be released through a New Zealand-owned record label.  

It topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand and reached No. 1 on America’s Top 40 chart.

The accompanying album, also titled How Bizarre, was certified gold in the States for 500,000 copies sold and is estimated to have sold over 3million copies worldwide.

According to Stuff, the single and album earned around $11million in royalties, with around $5million going to OMC’s late lead singer Pauly Fuemana.

Views for the How Bizarre music video are also starting to climb on YouTube, where the clip currently has 21million views and thousands of comments talking about the song’s viral popularity. 

How Bizarre isn’t the only Kiwi song to go viral on TikTok, with Benee’s SupaLonely also finding success on the platform.

The track became a bonafide sensation on the app in March, just as the coronavirus pandemic was ramping up.

For the month of March alone, it achieved almost 7billion plays TikTok and subsequently shot up music charts around the world.

It ended up reaching No. 6 on Australia’s ARIA chart and No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.
