A British pilot has died along with his wife and two of her family members in Gran Canaria after a tragic accident saw their car fall 246 feet down a precipice.

The accident took place on a stretch of motorway in the municipality of Galdar in the province of Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria in the Spanish Canary Islands.

The wreckage was reported by a motorway worker on the afternoon of 9th December.

A British pilot, his wife, her sister and her father have died after their car plunged 245ft off a cliff in Gran Canaria (pictured, a rescue helicopter works at the scene)

However, upon investigation, the authorities believe the accident occurred 18 hours before during the evening of 8th December.

The fatal accident involved a single vehicle, however the exact cause is still being investigated.

Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) were contacted after a worker noticed damage to concrete barriers placed at the edge of the road before a steep ravine

Agents went to the area and confirmed that the vehicle had fallen a reported 75 metres (246 feet), killing all four occupants.

They were unable to rescue the bodies due to the terrain and weather conditions making a helicopter or ground rescue far too risky.

The authorities are planning to retrieve the bodies today (10th December), weather permitting. However, there have been no further reports.

One of the victims has been identified as a British pilot called Richard who was in Gran Canaria with his wife Rita Garcia Bolanos on holiday from London visiting her father Ivan Garcia Buelna.

All three were killed along with one of Garcia Buelna’s daughters named Marta Garcia Bolanos.

Richard was a pilot for Norwegian Air Shuttle and lived in London with his wife, but made frequent trips to the Canary Islands to visit Rita’s father and grandmother, according to reports.

The investigation is ongoing.
