Hunter Biden put out a statement Wednesday saying he is under federal investigation over his taxes.

‘I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,’ Biden said.

The statement was put out by President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris‘ transition office.

‘I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,’ Hunter Biden said.

Hunter Biden’s statement was accompanied by one from his father, the president-elect.

‘President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger,’ Joe Biden said.

Hunter Biden’s business dealings – particularly those in Ukraine and China – have been politically problematic for his father for more than a year. Hunter Biden was doing business in foreign countries while his father was serving as President Barack Obama’s vice president.

President Donald Trump’s impeachment involved a scheme to pressure the Ukrainian president into announcing an investigation into Hunter and Joe Biden – a likely 2020 rival – while holding up $400 in military aid.

NBC News reported that Hunter Biden and his now ex-wife Kathleen Buhle had an IRS lien against them for unpaid taxes amounting to $112,805.09 – though it’s unclear if this is connected to the ongoing investigation.

Joe Biden’s Wednesday statement echoes the support he gave for his son during the first presidential debate with Trump, who mocked Hunter Biden for his drug use.

Biden had just finished talking about Beau Biden when the president interjected, ‘Are you talking about Hunter? He got thrown out of the military for cocaine use.’

‘My son, like a lot of people, like a lot of people you know at home, had a drug problem. He’s fixed it, he’s worked on it. And I’m proud of him. I’m proud of my son,’ the former vice president said then.
