Priyanka Chopra helps a slew of superhero kids in the new trailer for Netflix‘s We Can Be Heroes, which also had its release date pushed up.
Netflix had originally been slating the movie as a New Year’s Day release, but this new trailer (via Netflix YouTube) reveals it will be released on Christmas Day.
The film serves as a pseudo-sequel (of sorts) to director Robert Rodriguez’s 2005 children’s movie The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, with Pedro Pascal playing the grown-up Marcus Moreno and Taylor Dooley returning as Lavagirl.

The trailer opens with a shot of the Earth from outer space, with a child narrating, ‘At a time in the world where things were feeling less and less certain, there was always one thing you could count on – the Heroics, our planet’s team of superheroes.’
We see shots of some of these Heroics, including Pedro Pascal’s Marcus Moreno, the father of the narrator, Missy Moreno (YaYa Gosselin).
The father and daughter are watching something on TV, where they see one of the Heroics, Miracle Guy, but Marcus dismisses it as ‘a training exercise, probably.’

In reality, Miracle Guy is facing off with a number of mechanical creatures, as Tech-No (Christian Slater) notices he may ‘sound a little worried.’
Miracle Guy is seemingly killed, as Tech-No falls with Miracle Guy’s body to the Earth, as Missy says, ‘This was the day our heroes fell.’
But one day after school, she’s brought to a special facility with other children of superheroes, where Ms. Granada (Priyanka Chopra) tells her they’re ‘all in danger.’

Missy also meets a young girl who can do incredible things with water, who tells her that her mother is Lavagirl and her dad is Sharkboy.
News footage shows that all of the Heroics have been ‘captured by alien intruders’ as Missy tells the other kids that the ‘aliens will be coming for us next.’
The group then tries to convince the security guards to give them their access cards, but the guard insists that ‘no one is getting in and no one is getting out either.’
Daughter: Missy also meets a young girl who can do incredible things with water, who tells her that her mother is Lavagirl and her dad is Sharkboy
Aliens: News footage shows that all of the Heroics have been ‘captured by alien intruders’ as Missy tells the other kids that the ‘aliens will be coming for us next’
Kids and guards: The group then tries to convince the security guards to give them their access cards, but the guard insists that ‘no one is getting in and no one is getting out either’
The kids then set a few cushions down on the ground, which Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s daughter says it’s to, ‘protect your butts when you hit the ground,’ as she proceeds to take them out.
‘She’s got Shark strength!’ the guard cries, before being kicked across the room by the youngster.
They eventually manage to escape from the facility as they begin their training to rescue all of their parents.

When one of the kids asks how they can defeat the aliens who captured all the Heroics, Missy says they have a secret weapon: ‘teamwork.’
The trailer winds down with a number of shots featuring the kids’ unique powers, as Missy says, ‘alone our powers are special, but together, we’re unstoppable.’
The trailer ends with Missy telling a young hero named Rewind, who can rewind time, he did some ‘excellent work’ as he keeps rewinding her saying that, adding, ‘I just like hearing her say it.’
Rodriguez returned to write and direct We Can Be Heroes, which also stars Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang and Adriana Barraza, debuting on Netflix Christmas Day.
