Coronation Street shares a glimpse of the soap’s original set ahead of 60th anniversary

Coronation Street shares a glimpse of its VERY humble beginnings ahead of 60th Anniversary with before and after snaps of the soap’s set

It’s just days away from celebrating its 60th Anniversary.

And Coronation Street has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings in a small TV studio in Manchester, as fans got a glimpse of the soap’s original set on Tuesday.

Before and after snaps showed how the iconic ITV soap has progressed from being filmed on a small set to a vast seven-acre site in Salford, as it prepares to celebrate six decades on screen on Wednesday.

The (set) that started it all! Coronation Street has given fans a glimpse of the soap’s original studio as it prepares to celebrate its 60th Anniversary

Corrie gave fans a birds-eye view of the soap’s current set which is now considered ‘the biggest single television production site in the world.’

Stretching over 7.7 acres, the site in Trafford, MediaCityUK is home to over 400 staff, and stands in the shadow of the cities where it all began, Manchester and Salford.

Corrie relocated to MediaCityUK in 2014 before revealing its new Victoria Street extension in 2018.

The soap has come a long way from its humble origins with a cast of just 12 actors filming in Studio 2 at Granada Television.

Back then the show had a wooden set to represent the Street and the cobbles were painted onto the floor and cast pretending to step onto the imaginary kerb.

When Corrie moved to colour television in 1970, a new brick set was built as the previously-used wooden set had become damaged due to the Manchester weather, and a decade later the entire set was rebuilt on Quay Street.

The relocation also saw the addition of new modern houses in 1989, and as the soap increased it’s weekly number of episodes, additional studios and sets were added in 1993 and 2002.

On Wednesday Corrie celebrates its 60th Anniversary after first debuting on screens on December 9th, 1960.

The soap has marked the occasion with a week of dramatic storylines, including the long-awaited verdict in Yasmeen Nazir’s trial after defending herself against her abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe.

While Geoff was furious to learn Yasmeen had been acquitted on Monday night, his desperate attempts to prove his innocence could take a deadly turn on Wednesday, as he meets with Alya Nazir for a final showdown.

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7:30pm on ITV.
