Christina Perri is ‘learning to navigate her grief’ after losing a baby in the third-trimester

Songstress Christina Perri is reflecting on life two weeks after suffering a devastating pregnancy loss.

The Jar Of Hearts singer, 34, opened up about what she called ‘the worst experience of my life’ in a lengthy Instagram post on Tuesday, telling the world that while it’s been a struggle, she feels ‘overwhelmed’ by the amount of love and support she’s received.

Sharing a photo of her older daughter Carmella, two-and-a-half, laying down with their pug puppy Chocolate Chip, Perri said: ‘Hi friends. I couldn’t think of one thing that felt appropriate to post after my last post.’

Coping: Christina Perri gave fans an update as she continues to grieve the loss of a daughter in the third trimester of pregnancy, calling it the ‘worst experience’ of her life. The photo of her daughter Carmella and dog was paired with a long caption

Since losing her pregnancy, the musician said ‘the days have been long and yet also feel like they all blend into one.’

‘We’re not ok, but we believe in a day we will be. me, [husband Paul Costabile,] and carmella all wrap each other up in love and in sadness everyday. we’re learning to navigate our grief together.’

She went on: ‘Some days we can’t swim, some days we float fine. every day we burst into tears and every day we find moments to laugh. it’s been all the feelings, all the emotions, all the questions, all the anger, all the sadness; all day long. some moments of surrender and hope slip in there, but not often.’

While Christina said she knew these waves of emotion were a ‘normal’ part of grieving, she still found it ‘overwhelming.’

But Perri was also overwhelmed by ‘the love and support’ she’d received.

‘The calls, texts, messages, emails, letters, flowers, packages, gifts, food, prayers, cards, stories and visits have been the greatest outpouring of love in my lifetime.’

Christina revealed her baby girl tragically died after being ‘born silent’ in the third trimester two weeks ago, breaking the news by sharing a photo of herself and husband Paul holding their baby’s hand, praising their daughter’s fight to ‘make it to our world.’

Christina – who was understood to be around 32 weeks pregnant – wrote: ‘Last night we lost our baby girl. She was born silent after fighting so hard to make it to our world. she is at peace now and will live forever in our hearts.’

The heartbreaking news comes just months after the couple suffered a devastating miscarriage in January when Christina was 11 weeks pregnant.

Costabile, 33, shared the same photo on social media and wrote: ‘It’s been a rough couple weeks and we’re so grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers from you all.’

In early November Christina announced that her unborn baby would have to undergo an immediate operation after she was born amid issues with her intestines – a condition known as Jejunal atresia.

Jejunal atresia is when the intestine fails to develop properly and the membrane connecting the small intestines to the abdominal wall is not completely developed or is completely absent.

The intestine subsequently twists an artery supplying blood to the colon, creating a blockage.

Christina was hospitalised on November 11 due to pregnancy complications – she took to Instagram to update her fans with the news that ‘nothing ever goes as we plan’ while resting in a hospital bed.

Perri said to her fans on November 11: ‘Hey friends. Well, nothing ever goes as we plan. Baby is having an issue, so I’m gonna be here till it’s time for baby to come out. Which might have to be very soon. Which is very early.

‘Please send some love from your heart to the little heart beating in me that we all make it through this.’

In another social share she wrote: ‘Good morning. I just had a big long cry. I’m trying my best to feel each feeling as they come up.

‘Today has been a lot of sad & angry. I didn’t sleep the whole night and I miss Carmella!’

On November 14, Christina updated fans, saying: ‘The baby right now is scheduled to have an operation when they arrive. We’ll spend some time in the hospital. We’re going to prepare for [a newborn intensive care unit], but anything could happen.’

She added: ‘I guess the biggest thing is we hope the baby stays inside and can get as big as possible before this big event they have to go through.

‘It’s just a couple more weeks, so I’m gonna try to take it easy and hope for the best.’

On her Instagram story on Friday, Christina, revealed the baby would need to undergo surgery immediately after birth due to jejunal atresia.

She wrote: ‘We met with the surgeon and she’s amazing. Baby has jejunal atresia but we won’t know how severe til [sic] surgery.’

Christina shared the devastating news in a note posted to social media.

Despite being ‘shocked’ and ‘completely heartbroken,’ she made clear she wasn’t ‘ashamed’ or ‘discouraged.’

‘Today I had a miscarriage,’ Christina wrote on Twitter and Instagram. ‘Baby was 11 weeks old. We are shocked & completely heartbroken.

‘We were only one week away from sharing the news so I feel like it’s also important to share this news too.

‘I want to continue to help change the story & stigma around miscarriage, secrecy and shame,’ she continued.

‘I am so sad but not ashamed. I am ever reminded how amazing and powerful women are at making life and at healing.

‘To all the mothers who have been here and who will be here, I see you and I love you. I am so sad but not discouraged.’

‘When the time feels right we will try again, but today we mourn our little life lost,’ she wrote.

The Thousand Years singer got engaged to TV host and entertainment reporter Paul Costabile in June 2017, before tying the knot in December of that year.

In August 2017, Christina announced she was expecting her first child, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Carmella Costabile, in January 2018.

The greatest gift we’ve ever known !!! Welcome to the world Carmella Stanley Costabile born today,’ Paul captioned an Instagram post from shortly after her birth.

‘Mom and our little principessa are doing great. Dad can’t stop crying!’ he joked.
