Shawn Mendes talks about collaborating with Justin Bieber… and says he doesn’t believe the Holy singer once had no idea who he was
Shawn Mendes spoke about teaming up with Justin Bieber during an interview on Monday’s episode of The Project.
But while the 22-year-old is good friends with the Holy singer now, he said he doesn’t believe that Justin once didn’t know who he was.
During a September 2015 radio interview, Justin, 26, was asked what he thought about Shawn, who was relatively new to the music scene.

After pausing for moment, a bemused Justin turned to look at the camera, before asking: ‘Who’s Shawn Mendes?’
But Shawn said he didn’t believe Justin’s explanation for the bitter response: ‘He tried to explain to me he didn’t know who I was then and I don’t believe him!’
Shawn also spoke about collaborating with Justin on their recent single, Monster, revealing he’d been the one to reach out.

‘We’ve known each other for a few years but for some reason during the pandemic we ended up becoming kind of closer than ever before,’ he explained.
Shawn said he actually wrote Monster three years ago, but after discussing the song with Justin, he decided to get him involved.
The Señorita singer said Justin ‘connected’ with the song, which made Shawn think it would be ‘really beautiful’ to have him sing on the track.

He said Justin ‘wrote an incredible verse’, which they included in the song, with the whole collaboration coming about organically.
The song is about dealing with fame from an early age, something Shawn said he and Justin can both relate to.
‘Both of us were famous at a young age and I think it’s interesting when people put you up on a pedestal because it messes with your head a bit,’ he added.
