Professional cleaner Kacie shares her foolproof method for cleaning your iPhone to stop bacteria

A professional cleaner has revealed how she cleans her iPhone when her speaker isn’t working, and why you should be giving your phone a rub down every day if you wear makeup.

Kacie, from Melbourne, said a rubbing alcohol spray, a small brush or old toothbrush and a microfibre cloth is all you need to get your phone looking and functioning to its best again – and she illustrated this in a TikTok video on the subject.

‘If the speaker on your phone isn’t working well, this is how you clean it,’ Kacie wrote.

She continued: ‘Get some rubbing alcohol, spray it on a brush (I use Sabco) and brush it.’

The cleaner said you should focus around the earpiece section of the phone, as well as all the little holes and the charging dock at the bottom.

‘This is great if you wear makeup every day,’ Kacie said.

Once this is done, go over the entire screen and back of the phone with a microfibre cloth covered in the alcohol spray.

‘Sanitise that whole little bacteria box,’ Kacie wrote.

More than 70,000 people who saw the short clip thanked the cleaner for her post, and said they had been meaning to clean their phones for weeks.

‘What a coincidence. My speaker wasn’t working today and now I’ve seen your video. Thank you,’ one woman posted.

Others suggested their own cleaning solutions, including applying duct tape to the phone and then pulling off the sheets until all of the dirt has gone.

How does Kacie recommend you clean your phone?

1. Spray rubbing alcohol on a small brush or toothbrush.

2. Rub it over all of the areas of your phone that you touch, including the earpiece speaker and all of the holes at the bottom.

3. Apply rubbing alcohol to a microfibre cloth and run the cloth over the front and back of your device.

An Infectious Diseases and Immunology specialist revealed we need to clean our phones much more often than we think, given that the average person touches a part of their phone 2,617 times daily

Earlier this year, an Infectious Diseases and Immunology specialist revealed that we need to clean our phones much more often than we think, given that the average person touches a part of their phone 2,617 times daily.

‘The safest thing to do is consider your phone an extension of your hand, so remember you are transferring whatever is on your hand to the phone,’ Professor Nigel McMillan told Daily Mail Australia.

With this in mind, every time you put your smartphone down somewhere or do something and then touch your phone, you should be cleaning it.

‘Don’t put it down in random places if you can avoid it,’ Professor McMillan said.

‘Clean it every time someone else touches it, too, as the virus could be living on it far longer than you think.’

How can you best clean your mobile phone?

* Use only a soft, lint-free cloth.

* Avoid excessive wiping.

* Unplug all power sources, devices, and cables.

* Keep liquids away from your device.

* Don’t allow moisture to get into any openings.

* Avoid aerosol sprays, bleaches, and abrasives.

* Avoid spraying cleaners directly onto your device.

* Apple is recommending the use of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipes or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to wipe down any hard, nonporous surfaces.

‘They must have at least 60 or 70 per cent alcohol,’ he said.

‘Alternatively, they need isopropal alcohol or rubbing alcohol. Spray and wipe products will also do in a pinch as they have detergent.’

Tech giant Apple have recently changed their position on using alcohol-based wipes and similar disinfecting products on their devices.

While the company still recommends using a slightly damp lint-free cloth to wipe your device clean, it has changed its previous advice to avoid disinfectants.

Apple now says those problematic wipes are safe to use, and recommends using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to gently wipe the hard, non-porous surfaces of your Apple product.
