Sir Paul McCartney joked about having ‘sexual’ dreams as he discussed finding music inspiration from his visions in a new interview.

The Beatles star, 78, who has been happily married to businesswoman Nancy Shevell, 61, since 2011, recalled a ‘cool’ fantasy he had in recent weeks, admitting: ‘Your married head is in the dream saying: “Don’t do this. Don’t go here.”’

Insisting he’s a ‘great believer in dreams’, the singer reflected on using the messages in his sleep as a source of motivation for some of his most successful tracks.

When asked about the last interesting dream he had, the award-winning songwriter said: ‘It was of a sexual nature. Pretty cool, though. Very interesting, dreams of a sexual nature when you’re married. 

‘Because your married head is in the dream saying: “Don’t do this. Don’t go here.” And just to let you know, I didn’t. It was still a good dream.’

The media personality also spoke about the significance of dreams in his career as he added to the New York Times: ‘Let It Be came from a dream where my mother had said that phrase. I’m a great believer in dreams. I’m a great rememberer of dreams.’

His new album is set to be released on December 18 and serves as a continuation of his first two solo albums McCartney, from 1970, and McCartney II from 1980. 

The rock icon recently revealed he still turns to former bandmate John Lennon for advice when writing new songs, 40 years after he was shot and killed outside his New York apartment. 

Paul described his late friend and Beatles co-founder as ‘the best collaborator in the world’ and said the anniversary of what would have been his 80th birthday was ‘happy sad’.

In an interview with Uncut magazine, the producer explained: ‘I’m working on one at the moment that was going one way but I didn’t like the lyric. “No, this is not happening, mate.”

‘This would have been the point where John and I would have said “You know what, let’s have a cup of tea and try rethink this.”‘ 

Sir Paul also revealed he mentally ‘consulted’ with John while working on new material. 

His songwriting partnership with the artist is still seen as one of the most successful in history and together they turned The Beatles into the best selling band of all time, releasing 11 albums between 1963 and 1970.
