Kylie Minogue says her beau won over her granny by learning some Welsh

She has been dating her boyfriend Paul Solomons for two years and the pair seem to be more smitten than ever.

And Kylie Minogue has revealed that her family approve of her beau, 46, especially her Welsh grandmother, who met the creative director at GQ for the first time at her 100th birthday party.

Speaking on the Jonathan Ross Show, the pop legend, 52, said he passed with ‘top marks’ as he ‘learned a couple of phrases’ in Welsh before meeting her granny, which she absolutely ‘loved’.

Kyle added that Paul, who hails from Caerphilly, South Wales, impressed the rest of her extended family, who he met all at once after flying in for the party.

Appearing on the chat show, which is due to air on Saturday, Kylie explained: ‘This trip, because it was her 100th birthday, all the extended family were there.

‘It was really meet the parents x 100. He’d just flown in the day before. He did really well. They definitely approve.

‘We settled down and Paul got to spend some time with my granny… he’d done some google research and learned a couple of phrases in Welsh and would drop that with [granny] at the lunch table.

‘[She] loved someone speaking Welsh to her, so he got top marks.’

Kylie went on to reveal that her beloved grandmother is impressively set to turn 101 in just two weeks time, describing her as ‘phenomenal’.

She continued: ‘Two weeks’ time she’s going to be 101! My mum just sent me a video of her getting down the road with a walker.

‘She’s phenomenal. She either knits or plays scrabble on the iPad.’

The Spinning Around hitmaker also told Jonathan, 60, that she ‘almost recorded’ with Prince and was given a cassette of the late musician belting out her lyrics.

‘I mean, I met him and hung out, we’re the same size in our high heels. I drove my parents crazy as a teenager as I was wild about Prince.

‘[I met up with him] and he said, ‘Where are your lyrics?’ I said, ‘I don’t have any’. I didn’t write then. I went home, wrote lyrics [and got them over to him].

‘I think it was the next day – he was such a prolific worker – his driver hand delivered me a cassette with Prince singing my lyrics.

‘I don’t know where the cassette is…. I’m sure it’s somewhere.’

It was worth the effort as the pop star has made UK chart history, becoming the first woman achieve No.1 albums across five different decades in the UK.

Talking about her milestone, she said: ‘I’m so glad I didn’t know that [before]. When it got to release week there was added pressure.’

But despite selling more than 80 million records worldwide, Kylie admitted last month that she still deals with people who question her vocal talents.

‘I’ve had more than my fair share of criticism of my voice over the years,’ she previously told Vogue magazine.

‘And I’ve had the voices in my head knocking on my door, saying, “You can’t sing. She can’t sing!”‘

Kylie was famously branded a ‘singing budgie’ by critics when she launched her music career off the back of her role on Neighbours in 1987.

She continued: ‘A lot of it is to do with insecurity, so when naysayers are playing with your insecurities, that’s a difficult battle.

‘I’ve had to really tell myself, “Wait, how are you being successful if they’re telling you that you can’t sing and your voice is not a valid voice?” I would really struggle with that.’

Last month, Kylie opened up about her relationship with Paul, saying that she had ‘lucked out’ in meeting her handsome beau.

In an interview with You magazine, she recalled how she initially refused to meet Paul and their first date happened only because of a very persistent mutual friend.

‘One day, we went to the bar and my friend said, “right, I’m calling him now”,’ she explained.

Kylie said Paul arrived at the bar and they hit it off right away and swapped numbers, before going on a date.

‘What I wanted was a good guy and he was a good guy. We swapped numbers, went on a date. And that was it.’

The Jonathan Ross Show airs on Saturday at 9.30pm on ITV.
