The 22-year-old can be seen perfecting his backstroke on the cover, under a dreary sky of rain and handwritten lyrics.

He wrote ‘2 days #WONDER’ with a photo of him laughing inside a phone booth, dripping with rain, as he wore an open white dress shirt.

Mendes showed off his toned abs in another photo, lying on his back with his arms out, letting the storm pour over him.

He also took to Instagram with a behind-the-scenes video from the album, in which he discussed the track Call My Friends.

Homesick: He added: 'And that song had this insane bass-line and lyrics that felt kind of relevant to how I was feeling, being away from my friends at home and my family for three months, while I was traveling the world. ‘It has energy in it, because it was one of the first songs we wrote for the album. I just came off a massive world tour, and I was thinking what types of songs are gonna feel huge live.
