Gavin and Stacey WILL reunite this Christmas! Joanna Page and Mathew Horne set to co-host festive BBC Radio Wales show with co-stars from the sitcom calling in for a chat

Joanna Page and Mathew Horne will reunite on BBC Radio Wales for a special Christmas Day show this month.

The pair – who play Gavin and Stacey on the much-loved sitcom of the same name – were back on screen last Christmas as the married couple for the first new episode in a decade.

And they were spotted together in Cardiff last month, with fans hoping this meant some form of festive reunion was on the cards.

And this seems to be the case, with their one-off festive programme announced on Wednesday – which will feature a number of Gavin & Stacey stars as guests.

Joanna, 43, is the host of the station’s Sunday Morning With Joanna Page series and said of the seasonal edition: ‘I absolutely love Christmas and I’ve been having a fantastic time doing my show on BBC Radio Wales.

‘So when it came up that we could do a Christmas day show I knew that if there was anybody I’d want to share that with, it’s Mat. I love working with him, he’s so much fun.’

Mathew, 42, welcomed the idea of working with Joanna again, saying; ‘I jumped at the chance to do this show with Jo. I love working with Jo, I love Wales and I love doing radio.

‘Christmas day is a special day and, particularly this year, it’s been very challenging for a lot of people, so it’s nice to feel like we might be bringing a little bit of joy.’

The pair were seen celebrating the end of the Welsh lockdown on a night out together in Cardiff last month.

And fans were beside themselves at the prospect of another Gavin and Stacey reunion – hopeful that the actors were meeting to discuss it.

Fan Kirstie Smith spotted them while out with her boyfriend, and managed to get a snap of the pair.

Unable to pose with them due to COVID-19 rules and social distancing, the actors happily smiled at her through a perspex screen for the photo.

She later told Wales Online: ‘I was so chuffed to see them but obviously gutted due to what’s going on I couldn’t actually go up to them properly but at least I managed to get a quick picture.’

Someone else who saw the duo on the same night tweeted: ‘Don’t want anyone to lose their s**t but I’ve just seen Gavin and Stacey in Cardiff walking past me. Filming?’

It was always highly unlikely that the meeting was anything related directly to the sitcom’s potential return to screens as co-creator Ruth Jones revealed that there are ‘no plans’ for the series to return anytime soon, largely thanks to the current pandemic.

Joining the pair on the Christmas day show as guests will be their Gavin & Stacey co-stars Melanie Walters (Gwen), Larry Lamb (Mick), Alison Steadman (Pam), Steffan Rhodri (Dave), Robert Wilfort (Jason) and Laura Aikman (Sonia).

James Corden (Smithy) has also recorded a special message for the show.

The hosts will also be joined by Bonnie Tyler and singer songwriter Shakin’ Stevens.

Joanna added: ‘I’m really looking forward to chatting to some brilliant friends and guests on the show. We’ve got some really good quizzes, classic Christmas music and a bit of fun!’

Colin Paterson from BBC Radio Wales said: ‘We’re excited to be reuniting Joanna and Mathew this Christmas. Having Wales’ best loved couple, out of character, is a real treat. We hope their sense of fun will lift everyone’s spirits.’

Christmas Day With Joanna Page And Mathew Horne will be broadcast on BBC Radio Wales on Friday 25th December from 12 to 2PM.
