Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery explains why he got kicked out of drama school

Dacre Montgomery leaves The Project’s hosts unimpressed with his explanation of why he got kicked out of drama school

Dacre Montgomery left The Project underwhelmed with his explanation of why he got kicked out of drama school three times.

Appearing on Tuesday’s episode, the 26-year-old Stranger Things star was asked about what led to his multiple expulsions, but gave a very diplomatic answer.

‘Well, I got asked to leave, for sure. Um, I don’t know. I think, in the first year that I got into drama school, I was 18, and I think I was rambunctious and I didn’t have the attention span that I hope that I have now for my family and my partner,’ he began.

‘But I think I learnt work ethic and endurance, and I’d always wanted to be an actor but was really pushed in the right ways.

‘And I was just a bit vacant, especially in the first year, when I was asked to consider leaving a couple of times. And I’m thankful for it, ’cause I was really pushed in the right direction.’

After taking a moment to process his response, a disbelieving comedian Claire Hooper told Dacre it sounded like he was ‘covering for a much juicier story’.

Dacre simply laughed off her comment, but refused to elaborate any further on the reasons why he was kicked out.

In a post on Instagram in July last year, Dacre shared a throwback photo of himself at school and revealed what sort of a kid he was.

‘When I was a kid, I was lost. I had a really tough time in school. I was a big kid who loved drama,’ he began.

‘I never got passing grades, I wasn’t popular or a gifted sports player. Girls were never interested in me. I suffered from anxiety from a young age. I was distracted and I wasn’t focused.

‘But I had a dream, I was lucky – I knew what I wanted to do. And every night I went home and I focused on THAT. I visualised a future where my dreams became a reality.’

He added: ‘I never let the failures get me down. Because I believed in myself and I never let anyone tell me otherwise. You can do anything you set your mind to.’

'I was 18, and I think I was rambunctious and I didn't have the attention span that I hope that I have now for my family and my partner,' he said
