Phoebe Waller-Bridge has directed Paul Mescal in the gritty music video for Phoebe Bridgers’ Saviour Complex, which was released on Tuesday.

The Fleabag creator, 35, got behind the director’s chair to shoot the Normal People star, 24, as a man on the run who is met time and again by a dog named Charlotte.

In the video, Paul is first seen beaten and bruised as he sits on a beach and cries to himself where he is met by the adorable pooch who is dressed in a superhero cape.

Noticing the canine, Paul gets up and urges her on as he runs off and heads into the countryside for a stroll despite his apparent injuries.

While on his journey, he passes a tractor which is being driven by singer Phoebe before he heads out further into the wilderness.

However not all is as it seems, as Paul’s character hails a passing car and feigns illness to get the jump on the unsuspecting driver and steal his car.

Delighted with himself, Paul’s character gloats as he drives off, only to discover that the dog Charlotte is in the car with him, despite disappearing earlier on.

Paul heads to a hotel where he decides to lay low for the night, and leaves the dog in the car before Phoebe returns, this time in the guise of a hotel porter carrying a drink and a dog treat for Charlotte, who has appeared in the room.

Deciding not to think too much about the dog’s reappearance, Paul takes a shower and removes the fake scabs and wounds he’d put on his body to trick people.

After falling asleep beside the dog, Paul wakes up to find her missing as well as all his stolen money and the key to the car he took, as the video comes to a close with Phoebe sat on a beach alongside the dog.

The director and singer first came up with the music video concept after they connected over email while in quarantine amid the coronavirus crisis.

Phoebe makes her directorial debut with the music video, but she is a well-renowned writer and creator of shows like Fleabag and Killing Eve.
