Four women turn up out of blue for a coffee… to find they are all wearing the same jacket

What a coat-astrophe! Four women queue up separately for a coffee to find they are ALL wearing the same jacket

  • All four women women saw the funny side at the Cafe Nero in Sherborne, Dorset
  • Rebecca Birch had agreed to meet her friend Emily Lawrence for a walk and a takeaway coffee only to discover they were wearing the matching jackets

We’ve all had that awkward moment when we’ve turned up somewhere to find another person wearing the same outfit.

So imagine the embarrassment when these four women realised they were stood in the queue at a coffee shop in near-identical yellow puffer jackets.

All saw the funny side, though, and mum-of-five Rebecca Birch joked they were a ‘ray of sunshine in difficult times’ after getting another customer to take a snap.

The taxi driver, 48, had agreed to meet her friend Emily Lawrence for a walk and a takeaway coffee only to discover they were wearing the matching jackets. When they got to the Caffe Nero in Sherborne, Dorset, they spotted another customer in yellow.

No sooner had the three started to remark on the incredible coincidence when a fourth woman joined them in the same coloured jacket.

Mrs Birch, from nearby Wincanton, said: ‘It was such a funny thing to happen. We were like, “oh my god, we’ve got the same coat on”.’

After the picture was posted on social media, it got 21,000 likes. Mrs Birch added: ‘It’s a sign of the times – we’re all standing there with our masks on. It’s quite poignant.’

She continued: ‘We met up in the town to get some exercise and it was so funny – we both saw it each other and laughed.

‘We thought it was hilarious already.

‘We felt embarrassed in the first instance because people were looking at us as if to say ‘look at them two’. I think they thought we were either girlfriends or twins. We felt quite silly.

‘I said “let’s go grab a takeaway coffee in Caffe Nero”.

‘There was already one person in there ordering a coffee. She was there with her baby and her husband.

‘We looked at each other and said “oh my god, look. She’s got the same colour coat on as well”.’

Mrs Birch added: ‘We had a laugh with them and the barista said “look at you three all matching with your mustard-coloured coats on”.

‘We started to order and the next minute I turned around and this lady walked in behind me.

‘I couldn’t believe someone else had walked in with the same coat on.

‘They’re all different – ones Joules, one’s Benneton, one’s Primark. The lady at the back said ‘mine’s Marks and Spencer’.

‘My friend said “oh, you couldn’t take a photo could you” to the lady’s husband.

‘The baristas were all laughing. There were two on the shift and the girl serving us was incredulous – it was hilarious.

‘It’s made me think about mixing up my style a bit.’

FEMAIL’S FASHION VERDICT

By Amy Kester, Assistant Style Editor for the Daily Mail

An uncanny coincidence? Most definitely. But if any coat was likely to show up in numbers this season, the yellow, quilted jacket was a good bet.

With socialising in 2020 confined mainly to outdoors, we’ve never relied more on our trusty coats. And the trustiest has to be the padded jacket. The quilted style makes them super warm, plus they look great worn with pretty much anything.

But why yellow, you may ask? Well that too seems to be colour of the season – providing a flash of brightness we’ve all needed. In this photo, the lady at the front of the queue is wearing the Gosway chevron quilt padded coat from Joules, which was £169 but has been reduced to £49.95.

The other three appear to be wearing styles from earlier seasons. Second and third are jackets by Benetton, where a similar hooded puffer is £99, and Primark, which would have cost around £15.

The woman at the back is wearing a lightweight feather and down jacket from Marks and Spencer, which can currently be bought in different shades for £49.50.
