This is the incredible moment a sea of fog rolled over sleeping London last night – before the UK woke up this morning to misty, murky conditions ahead of an overcast 12C weekend.

Footage filmed from the Novotel Canary Wharf in east London shows wisps of fog appearing on the horizon from around 5pm before the city it enveloped by a sea of cloud by 1am.

Temperatures plunged below freezing in parts of the UK overnight  – with Reading dipping to -1.7C in the coldest night since April 1 – before the country woke up to frosty conditions this morning.

Fog could linger on in some areas all day, keeping temperatures below 3C, before we move into an overcast weekend. Temperatures are expected to rise to 12C in parts of southern England and most areas will stay dry.

By 1am - the city is covered in a blanket of fog, with only the tops of skyscrapers like the Shard still remaining visible

Into the weekend, the chilly nights with frost and fog are likely to continue.

However, Miss Diamond said: ‘There will be plenty of winter sunshine to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday, continuing into the start of next week.’

The pattern of dry days and chilly nights is due to last towards midweek but approaching weather fronts could bring cloud and some showery rain in the west.

When lockdown ends in England next Thursday, a change in the weather is predicted, with unsettled conditions back in charge.’

Met Office spokesman Bonnie Diamond said: ‘We’ve had a fairly mild November characterised by areas of low pressure but we now have high pressure in the Atlantic extending across the UK.

‘It looks like a return to mild temperatures.’

The greatest chance of fine and dry spells is in southern and eastern areas, forecasters say.
