Saved by the Bell star Lark Voorhies reveals why Dustin Diamond is not returning as Screech

When Peacock’s highly-anticipated Saved by the Bell reboot debuts on Wednesday, most of the main cast from the original show will be back, except Dustin Diamond.

Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle in the original show, which aired for five seasons between 1989 and 1992, is returning in the new show for a special appearance, which was announced in October.

The 46-year-old actress appeared on Toronto’s The Roz and Mocha Show on Tuesday, where revealed why Diamond isn’t coming back as Screech.

‘The almighty dollar rules on that,’ Voorhies said, though she added, ‘They do have a segment in there that explains why he’s not here.’

‘He wants to be paid and respected, we would for him to come back on set,’ the actress added.

She continued that Diamond is, ‘going through his growing pains,’ but thinks, ‘he can get back on track.’

‘He’s going through his adult issues and all of this but I am sure he’ll be back — granted the perfect contract for him I’m sure he would be back,’ she added.

Voorhies was originally not announced as part of the cast when the reboot was first coming together, though her return was announced in October.

The actress added she was always, ‘supportive of the show, no matter what’ and now she’s looking forward to ‘seeing the finished product.

Her co-star Elizabeth Berkeley also recently spoke about the potential for Diamond to return in another interview. 

‘I don’t know if he will make an appearance, we’ll see. If there’s another season, maybe it’s something to explore,’ she said.

The actress admitted she hasn’t, ‘talked to him in a long time, since we finished the show,’ though she added it wasn’t, ‘because of anything bad.’

‘He was always nice to me and he’s had his journey,’ Berkeley added.

The new Saved By the Bell will return to Bayside High, focusing on a new group of students from diverse backgrounds.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar returns as Zack Morris, who is now the Governor of California, who has faced criticism for shutting down too many underfunded schools.

He proposes to send the students from these schools to some of the best schools in the state, including his alma mater, Bayside High.

Mario Lopez returns as A.C. Slater, who is now a gym teacher at Bayside High, while Elizabeth Berkeley returns as Jessie Spano, a guidance counselor at the school.

Tiffani Thiessen is also expected to return as Kelly Kapowski, though it’s not clear in what capacity.
