Patti Newton looks downcast as she steps out in Melbourne as husband Bert recovers in hospital

She revealed on Thursday that her husband, Bert, was recovering in hospital after a mystery health battle. 

And on Friday, Patti Newton was spotted looking downcast as she stepped out with her daughter, Lauren, while running errands in Melbourne.  

Patti, 75, wore a face mask as she picked up some dry cleaning while accompanied by Lauren and her grandchildren.

The showbusiness veteran dressed casually in a leopard-print top and blue jeans, which she teamed with a Louis Vuitton handbag. 

Lauren, 40, who gave birth to her sixth child, Alby, in August, wore a matching maxi dress and a face mask. 

Patti had revealed on Thursday that her 82-year-old husband had been hospitalised.

Patti shared a picture of Bert to Instagram in a hospital bed and wearing a face mask. 

‘Bert’s been in hospital [but] all good. He’s got a Lot of Living to Do,’ she captioned the picture. 

But Patti told The Herald Sun on Saturday that Bert is doing well and that their six grandchildren are keeping his spirits up.

Patti said that Bert has a special bond with his youngest grandson, Alby James Newton Welsh, who is named Albert after his granddad. 

Bert’s health first became a concern in 2012 when he underwent a quadruple bypass.

In the years following the heart surgery, he was hospitalised three times with pneumonia and was also diagnosed with anemia.

Anemia can make a person feel tired or weak because there are not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body’s tissues. 

The four-time Gold Logie winner told reporters outside hospital in 2017 that he was feeling better after being treated for pneumonia.

‘I’m feeling better now. It took a while. I didn’t realise until I copped it the first time, that pneumonia is such a serious thing, but I’m feeling better now,’ he said at the time.

It came after a source claimed Bert’s battle with pneumonia ‘shook him to the core’.

‘When he had a health scare with pneumonia in 2017, it shook him to the core,’ an insider told the publication in April.

‘He realised he was actually vulnerable and that terrified him. He knew he had a close call and had to take far better care of himself.’
