Dave Hughes reveals how radio king Kyle Sandilands reacted to him landing the 2Day FM breakfast gig

On Monday, Southern Cross Austereo announced the hosts of 2Day FM’s new Sydney breakfast show: Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan.

And Hughesy, 49, has now revealed how Kyle Sandilands – who hosts Sydney’s top-rating breakfast show on KIIS FM – reacted to the news.

He told News.com.au on Tuesday that Kyle said he had a ‘professional respect’ for him and wanted to ‘hang out’ when Hughesy moved to Sydney for the role.

‘Out of the blue Kyle rang me the other day when the rumour [about 2Day FM’s new breakfast line-up] broke,’ Hughesy said.

‘Kyle rang me and I said, “Are you recording this conversation?” He said, “No.” He said that he’s looking forward to us being in Sydney. He’s not gonna hang s**t on us.

‘He said, “I’ve got professional respect for you and let’s hang out when you get here.”‘

Kyle and his co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson previously hosted the 2Day FM breakfast slot, before they defected to to KIIS in 2014.

2Day FM has attempted several different breakfast formats in the almost seven years since they left, but they have all failed to get ahead in the market.

The Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed and Erin will replace Music For Breakfast, the music-only show fronted by Jamie Angel since August 2019.

Dave and Ed currently host the Hit Network’s drive show, while Erin is being drafted in from Nine Radio, where she was known for her sports coverage on 2GB.

Despite quitting Nine Radio, Erin will continue to be employed by Channel Nine.

‘Erin remains with Nine’s television business. She is leaving Nine Radio and leaves with our best wishes as we didn’t want to stand between her and what is a great opportunity,’ said a network spokesperson.
