Alison Brie tells fans she’d love to do a GLOW movie but ‘don’t hold your breath’ for something soon

Alison Brie says it ‘might take a minute’ to make a GLOW movie actually happen.

The 37-year-old actress starred as Ruth Wilder in the Netflix comedy-drama series, which has been axed by the streaming giant, and Alison is eager to turn the show into a film.

While she said she ‘certainly think[s] a movie could tie everything up,’ she told film  and TV side The Playlist and fans ‘don’t hold your breath’ for a film follow-up to happen soon.

‘Our creators, Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, are incredible writers. And they’re so devoted to these characters that they created. I think a movie would be a great way to wrap it up.’

Despite this, Alison has her doubts about whether her ambition will actually come to fruition. 

She said: ‘I’m a little pessimistic about it actually happening just in light of everything that’s gone on this year and how difficult it is to get anything back into production with Covid, and I’m also part of the Community cast, who’s been trying to get a movie going for six years, so what I’m saying is don’t hold your breath because if it does happen, it might take a minute.’ 

And the Hollywood star has admitted to being saddened by the show’s cancellation.

She shared: ‘It’s definitely a bummer. I’m going to miss playing with those incredible women and Marc Maron and Chris Lowell.

‘But you know, we’re so lucky. We’re lucky that we got to make three, to me, perfect seasons of a show. I love it so much and it will live on Netflix forever. So people can still check it out. 

GLOW tells the story of the 80s female professional wrestling promotion Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

Back in October it was announced that the Netflix show would not be proceeding with with its fourth and final season as planned after a coronavirus-related production shutdown, according to Deadline.   

‘COVID has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show. Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW,’ series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch revealed in a statement.  

They added: ‘We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone,’ the creators added. 

‘There’s a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again.’ 

As Flahive and Mensch noted they will miss their ‘cast of weirdo clowns’ and heroic crew, fans of the critically-acclaimed comedy turned to Twitter to mourn the loss.

‘I’m very disappointed,’ one user wrote. ‘It deserved a finale. All the people who put their souls in this series deserved a finale. We, the fans, deserved a finale.’  

Another disheartened fan pointed out the premature end comes before actresses  Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin had the chance to score Emmy nominations. 

Meanwhile, Betty Gilpin earned three consecutive Emmy nods for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.  

When the actress heard of her third nomination in July 2020, she shared a cheeky statement addressed to the Television Academy. 

‘To the Television Academy — how dare you. I really can’t stress enough how much of a threat this nomination is to my current quarantine brand of pasta and sad,’ she said.  

She continued: ‘In the Time Before, being born with a healthy protective emotional wall missing meant I got to channel that into pretend time in exchange for health insurance and claps.’  

The dramatic scripted series was based on the Eighties wrestling show of the same name, which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.  

The Netflix series has won over fans with its endearing and honest portrayals of being a woman in Hollywood during the Eighties, while exploring social topics that are still relevant today, including misogyny, racism, immigration and homophobia.
