Patti Newton explains husband Bert is keeping his spirits up with calls from his grandkids while he’s in hospital having tests before undergoing ‘physical rehabilitation’
Bert Newton sparked fears for his health after he was pictured in hospital on Thursday.
But his wife Patti, 75, says Bert, 82, is doing well and undergoing tests – and it’s his grandchildren that are keeping his spirits up.
While in hospital, Bert is enjoying calls from all six of his grand kids, Sam, Eva, Lola, Monty, Perla and Alby.

Patti told The Herald Sun on Saturday: ‘They phone him at the hospital and have sent him pictures to put on the wall. They all adore their Poppy. We are so lucky.’
Patti said that Bert has a special bond with his young grandson, Alby James Newton Welsh, who is named Albert after his granddad.
On Thursday, Patti shared a photo to Instagram of the veteran entertainer wearing a mask while lying in his hospital bed.

‘Bert’s been in hospital [but] all good. He’s got a lot of living to do,’ she captioned the picture.
The Herald Sun reports that Bert will stay in hospital until early next week, then will do some ‘physical rehabilitation to improve his strength and fitness.’
Bert’s health first became a concern in 2012 when he underwent a quadruple bypass.
In the years following the heart surgery, he was hospitalised three times with pneumonia and was also diagnosed with anemia.

Anemia can make a person feel tired or weak because there are not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body’s tissues.
The four-time Gold Logie winner told reporters outside hospital in 2017 that he was feeling better after being treated for pneumonia.
‘I’m feeling better now. It took a while. I didn’t realise until I copped it the first time, that pneumonia is such a serious thing, but I’m feeling better now,’ he said at the time.
